Bought RM Williams and Worn Once but Too Small - What Options Do I Have?

Hi OzBargain,

Bought a pair of RM Williams as part of the recent Iconic deal.

Had previously tried the sizing in store and the size I bought fit. However, have worn them for one day and my feet were extremely sore at the end of the day. People have said the leather will mould, but I don't think the length is correct, and don't want to risk the shoe losing further value.

As a result of the leather already showing marks, I don't think I can return to the Iconic, but wanted to see if anyone has a solution apart from selling secondhand on eBay or other.

Thanks.

Shoe stretchers are a thing. Look them up on Amazon.

  • If it's almost a fit. Put a freezer bag of water in them and put them in the freezer for a day

    • Cool

    • But the shoes will be too cold to wear after :(

    Boltcutters.

  • You can just try to return to the iconic. I think they ask for pictures and they can decide then. I've received boots from there that were clearly used with marks before, so they must be exchanging them.

With RM Williams, the length of the boots won't change due to the toe and heel inserts, only the width will mold to your feet somewhat. The fit can differ a bit even in the same size. For example, I own 8 pairs in 8G and my Comfort Craftsman Chestnuts hurt my toes, but my Signature Chestnuts fit like a dream.

I suggest wearing them occasionally, breaking them in slowly until the boots mold to your feet better. That's why people often wear new leather boots while watching TV at home, walk on carpet and try not to flex the boots so they could return them as new if they don't work out.

Leather boots are like fine wine, they get better with age so get acquainted. Don't go 8 hours a day walking in them right of the bat, you will experience hell, especially when you never had an RM before. Slowly wins the race.

  • Put on a pair of thick socks. Put the boots on (may be difficult) When fitted fill boots & socks (still on your feet) with warm water and wear the boots around for a while. They will gradually stretch to suit your feet, You may have to repeat the procedure several times.

  • They are leather. they will stretch and fit better over time.

Be prepared for that measure of time to be measured in years though. It will not be fast.

I have two pairs, same size but slightly different toebox shape. Took years for the narrower toebox to stretch out enough to be properly comfortable.

You can try taking it back to the store to see if they would accept an exchange or resize it for you if it was they incorrectly sized you in the first place. If not, a cobbler could professionally stretch them or buy one of those shoe stretchers if it’s the width that is the issue. The last option is to sell it and buy a new pair.

  • Could sell it on market place, you not alone, there are tons with wear once and for sale.

  • Did a salesman assist you with the sizing and advise you which size to buy? If so you could argue for a return based on incorrect advice.

    • It's a online purchase based on the Ozb RM Williams cult advices.
When I visit the actual store, sales person adveiced me to make sure it fit correctly, and here ppl people going for online deals.

    • I tried in store previously and it seemed to fit OK based on a quick walk in the store. However, when the shoe arrived, felt a lot tighter and feet were in pain after a day.

  • You wore them for a whole day… Would you want to buy shoes someone else had returned after one day of wear?

The store wouldn’t be able to sell them again, they’re an expensive product. People don’t want nearly new for the cost of R.M. Williams…

IMO, either sell them secondhand, stretch them or donate them…

  • As the boots are too short & worn once then no other option but to sell them to recoup some $ & then buy proper size

  • First time i wore mine they hurt like hell after a few hours and i got bad blisters. Ended up just wearing them around the house for a few weeks with 2 or 3 pairs of thick socks and now they fit like a dream.

  • As people have mentioned, first day I wore them had a couple of painful pressure sores. Had the exact some worries you have, but after lots of reassurance, I kept wearing them and now they are like clouds. I wouldn't worry too much unless they are too short as others have mentioned above.
