  • Does it still good for boot drive to AMD Gen4 mobo? Thank you for all advices.

    • +3

You mean AM4 mobo (B550 or X570)? If you don't have a Ryzen 9 5950x with RTX 3090Ti or 4090 + 8K video cameras, then this is fine.

The main problem now is no one knows how much further price drop we can expect from SSDs. The SSD price drop is across the board on every level (including gen 4 flagship SSDs).

Some things to watch out on 970 Evo Plus 1TB:

      • For the current batch, upgrade the SSD firmware as soon as possible.
      • The current batch has an improved controller, but the NAND's TLC sustained write speed is inferior.
      • Tom's Hardware review was based on an older batch. The current batch generally performs faster.
      • The new controller uses a more aggressive SLC cache (compared to the older batch) so it is generally a toss up in full drive write between old and the new batch. Thus, overall, performance wise, newer batch / current batch is generally considered better. The only exception is if you intend to use the SSD filled above 80% a lot.
      • Thanks for this. Im trying to get up to speed with all the component swapping cr*p.
Is there a place i can get up to date info on most brands/batches?

I was about to pull the trigger on the Adata Blade preorder deal but saw a review about component swapping for that.
Or is it just a lottery with most SSDs these days? I saw that MX500s have had a series of component shennigans too….

Contemplating the idea of purchasing only from places with easy returns so i can google the component nunbers on what arrives beore i install it.

You don't need eBay Plus. Standard shipping is free, making this the best deal so far for this drive delivered.

    • Thanks, updated the title.

    I'll wait till it's under 80

    • +3

It is already under $80 everywhere (most retail stores, pickup price though). The lowest AU retail price was $69, but sold out quite quickly and that was also pickup price (shipping extra).

$78-$79 is the norm currently, but we know the retailers could go down to $69 (but they generally don't).

  • Thoughts on best PCIe NVME N2 drive for sub $100?

    • +11

Currently, none, unless you are a huge fan of YMTC NAND with Maxio MAP1602A (and assuming you get it from a local retailer, that retailer will be doing the warranty - so make sure you pick one that is willing to do a proper SSD warranty). According to an OZBer, that retailer does store credit by default (which isn't ideal). Also, the price isn't super duper bargain.

      • SN770 1TB, the $20 e-gift card deal has finished so $79 after rebate is no longer possible.
      • Gigabyte AORUS Gen4 5000E 1TB $79 deal also gone so at the current price, it's not worth it either.
      • Cheap PCIe gen 3 x4 1TB SSDs at $59 and below.
      • 970 Evo Plus 1TB is okay at $78 for now (all time low was $69 though), but the new NAND isn't technically as good.
      • Kingston NV2 1TB @ $68 is somewhat tempting, except it only has 3 years warranty and it performs worse than 970 Evo Plus. Also, better hope Kingston hasn't started flooding the supply here with the QLC version (coz. that version is junk).
      • Some 2TB SSDs have really large SLC cache, making 1TB SSDs kinda look somewhat average.
      • PCIe gen 4 x4 flagship SSDs are much better optimised at 2TB.
      • Dirt cheap 2TB NVMe SSDs at $118 or a tad lower.
      • SSD prices still trending downwards + end of financial year sales coming up.

Too many choices and it comes down to what compromises you are willing to accept. Bottom line, you know your requirements and situation best so you decide what's the best 1TB for you. Don't let other people influence you.

      • Is there something bad with the YMTC nand with Maxio MAP1602A?

        • It's complicated.

          • The SSD is too new so reliability cannot be determined yet.
          • Fanboys / fangirls hyped up the NAND, but let's not forget previous gen has reliability issue and YMTC did not manage to offer any proper solution for owners. Now, fans want us to believe this gen is all great. YMTC did opt of less spare cells (since they hyped up the higher write cycles).
          • Maxio MAP1602A is also new and some of these Chinese SSD makers simply don't have good after sales support (hardly any firmware update, if any).
          • The SSD is still DRAMless. True, in most general benchmarks, the SSD does well (and you really have to get a top notch SSD to beat it @ 1TB).
          • All 4 channels controllers (including Maxio MAP1602A) are optimised at 1TB, at 2TB, the flagship 8 channels controller based SSDs really pull ahead.
          • The 1TB vs 2TB (as I mentioned previously, there are 2TB SSDs with large SLC cache).
          • DRAMless SSDs still don't do well in server type situation. Most people don't care and most reviews don't show that issue.

I don't own YMTC based SSDs (though there is one SSD I am yet to open which could have YMTC, but that's el cheapo 2TB SSD). In short, the biggest question is reliability. Also, if Samsung and WD cannot get it right in their initial firmware version, are you going to believe Maxio and YMTC have no such issue? Lack of firmware upgrade is a known issue for 3rd party Chinese branded YMTC NAND SSDs.

      • Thanks heaps for a detailed reply, I really appreciate your expertise!

    Good for Ps5?

    • No, PS5 requires PCIe gen 4 x4 support. There are some dodgy PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs which work on PS5 but are generally slower than this SSD.

      • -6

This does not deserve downvotes. All ssd posts should mention whether it’s ps5 compatible or not. Please mods, make this mandatory for OPs.

I am over whelmed by number of SSDs available on the market, can someone suggest a good laptop SSD? Main point being power efficiency, TomsHardware suggests best in class is a Hynix model which we don't have here in Australia.

    • +1

      WD Blue or Corsair MX.

      • +1

        Thanks for the suggestion,
Is any blue okay? they have a few different model numbers

Why would someone neg my comment?

  • +2

Waiting for a good deal for 2tb

  • great, currently SN850x as the main drive and 970 evo plus as 2nd storage
