Hiring Independent Contractor or Company/Contract Employee?

What's better, should we hire an I.C. or C.E.?

Sometimes get recommended indies through Word of Mouth and they're ethnic tradies without a website or such.
I would like the job done properly and after-care services/protections available if needed like warranties.

We wanted a residential/home improvement work done (bathroom renovation).
Might need to choose our own materials like shower panels, etc.

Any tips?
TIA.

Depending on state there might be no requirement for builders insurance (and it only kicks in if builders go bankrupt / insolvent otherwise you need to take them to tribunals and courts). You will have to take them to court if anything goes wrong and they don't want to rectify it. Painful but true.

  • Cash only handshake agreement

    • And full payment up front… 🤣

  • If you want a true warranty, you need a proper business with all the insurance etc along with a good presence and reputation. This costs extra.

If you want a good honest tradie that works for cash, you’ll probably be in a position to have them rectify problems at the early stages if they cover mistakes etc in good faith. They do exist, but they are rare.

If you hire the cheapest you can find, you’ll be lucky to get any form of warranty at all. The second they’ve got their cash they’ll be gone.
