Manfrotto Tripod Heads - 501HDV - Black + MH055M88-Q5 - $158 and $285 Delivered from Amazon.fr

90

This deal is for people who take their photography seriously and use tripods. These are two Tripod heads which are cheap compared to prices in OZ (I checked on www.getprice.com.au). I am aware that this deal won't interest a lot of people but if some of you who actually use and need a tripod head can score a good bargain it is worthwhile posting.
If you find a cheaper price, please post the link and keep in mind I am just trying to help and cannot search all possible websites. I will then amend as soon as I am back in the office tomorrow.

Have a great evening all.

    "Manfrotto - MH055M88-Q5 - 7kg"

Holy sh*t, I thought that was one heavy tripod! Then I realised that it was the maximum load it could take :-)

  • Looking for a good tripod for my 7d+24-70f2.8l now. Any suggestion for me pls. I'm thinking of buying tripod Manfrotto 055XPROB with the head 498RC2. Is that a good choice? How to compare my choice with this deal?

    • +2

I would recommend the 190XPROB legs - the 055 series is pretty heavy and more suited for studio work/heavier gear. The 190 series is decently light but very solid - great for bringing along with you (cheaper too).

In terms of the head, it really depends on what type (ball socket, joystick, 3 way, video or photo orientated etc.) suits your camera usage. The 498RC2 you mentioned is a good starting ball socket head for photos and the combo will easily hold a 7D + 24-70. The 501HDV head in this post is mainly for video work.

        Can u compare 190xprob with 190XB. Thanks

        • +1

Only difference is that the XPROB allows for the centre column to be positioned horizontal like this. The XB also doesn't have a levelling bubble on the top, although this isn't really useful anyway.

        • Thanks. I will go wiyh your suggestion. What are differences between head 498rc2 n 496rc2, mate?

        • They're pretty much the same, except that the 498 has a higher load capacity (8kg vs 6kg), and the 498 has some sort of panning scale on it. 496 will hold your gear fine, but get the 498 if the price difference isn't too much.

Bear in mind though that ball socket heads are a pain to pan smoothly/accurately frequently as they have no handles.

Evol's answer is pretty spot on.

I have the 055XPROB and the 498RC2 (for stills) and a fluid head for video. Excellent setup and I would highly recommend it. Yes it is much heavier than the carbon fiber 190PROB so if you want to do landscape photography or will be carrying your tripod with you, fork out the extra cash and get the carbon fiber. I've been hiking with the 55XPROB and let me tell you, it was unpleasant.

I use my tripod for video and stills, so the heavier tripod was a good choice for me. It really depends what you want / need.

EDIT: Whatever you do, do not buy your tripod from 'thatsverynice camera'. Worst store I have ever dealt with.

Am I the only person who looked at just the picture and thought it was a boat motor?

    • I thought it was a whipper snipper.

    • Midget black stormtrooper with massive baton.

It never ceases to amaze me how expensive some camera gear is.
Mind you i've got some Manfrotto gear myself, so i do get it…kind of…

  • That's a great price for the 501HDV head if Amazon FR will ship it here, as the cheapest ones on eBay are AUD$200+.

    • This from what I can tell is the same fluid head on the 561BHDV-1, I really want to get a monopod for video.

  • Good price for Manfrotto - 501HDV.
Unfortunately, my MT293A4 is not strong enough (4kg max load) to match it.

By the way, does anyone know how long it is going to take them to withdraw money from my bank account once I have purchased an item from amazon.de or amazon.fr ?
Is it happening right away, let's say in 2…3 days, or do they wait till an item is shipped to me, which may take up to 3…4 weeks ?

    • I think they take it once it is shipped.

For all of you interested, it is worth going on Amazon.fr to look for further Manfrotto gear. Chances are it is cheaper than in OZ and that they WILL ship it here.
The two items in the post can certainly be shipped here - I tried it!

      • Thanks. It is abit of worry as it may take up to 4 weeks to shipt it here.
I cannot guarantee that our dollar will be so high by then.

        • I cannot guarantee it but 1. they will ship it faster (saying up to 4 weeks means they cannot be late) and 2. the dollar will remain quite high given the crisis in Europe is far from over. So you will be OK. I reckon if your ordered today you will have it by the end of the month. I never had to wait for as long as they specified.

I am not sure where it states it takes up to 4 weeks - they have both items in stock.

        • I was just thinking of the worst case scenario.
Again, excellent deals. I'm so tempted although I will have to push my tripod towards the max load limit.

      • I don't speak French, a language i have always adored & respected.

Is there anything apart from Google Translate that can assist me with the .fr & .de Amazon sites so i can more fully engage with the excellent posts by my mate Gallifrey?

        • Unfortunately not. Alternatively, ask (or find) a friend who speaks those languages or maybe look at the items posted on www.amazon.co.uk to read about features in English. Then go back to the foreign language sites to order (maybe keep two windows open to help you understand better - they layout of the various Amazon sites is virtually identical).
Google Translate should be fine though to understand enough to order - I have tried it and it seems to work well (admittedly some things sound a bit funny but one knows what is meant).

        • Thank you Gallifrey.
I'll now get back to my foie gras.

…i wonder if this post will get guillotined?

  • Just ordered the 501hdv using chrome translate, as I don't speak frog. $164AUD delivered.
Very happy, should be great with the d7000 and lenses for video on my 055proB.
The foreign amazon deals can be a little tricky to execute but thanks to Gallifrey. Being an ozbargainer wasn't meant to be easy, just cheap!

    • Oh mate, you've just gone ahead & used the 'f' word.

Gallifrey went off like a 'f' in a sock when i used the 'f' word earlier (he used the word 'racist') and managed to persuade the moderators to censor me for being 'inappropriate'.

Whatever you do, don't mention the 'f' word again, or French terrorist bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, or French nuclear testing on Mururoa Atoll, or French Colonial torture in Algeria.

  • OK, serious question.

I've just compared the price, ignoring postage, for a particular watch on the various Amazon's & get this:

    Amazon.com USD 16.54 = AUD 15.75 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAYQKO

    Amazon.co.uk GBP 21.78 = AUD 32.64 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Casio-Casual-Sports-AW80D-1AV-Stainl…

    Amazon.fr EUR 30.00 = AUD 35.30 http://www.amazon.fr/Casio-AW80D-1AV-Homme-Montre/dp/B000GAY…

    Amazon.de EUR 26.78 = AUD 31.52 http://www.amazon.de/Casio-AW80D-1AV-Herren-Uhr/dp/B000GAYQK…

OK, it's a sample size of 1, and the US site has it reduced quite a lot, but still it's not looking too good for the European sites…

Does anyone have a handle on what categories, apart from Manfrotto gear, might i get more favourable prices out of Europe?

    • Using the f word is not appropriate, not in public anyway. However, discussing facts what they did is fine. I encourage open discussion.

As regards the prices it depends on the items. On the whole prices in Europe are as cheap if not cheaper than in the US. Also, keep in mind that the shipping is not the same. For example, while you can order a Dyson DC37 from Amazon Italy, you might not be able to do so from Amazon Germany. So it is not a matter of just price but also from where you can get it.

      • You'll find the 'f' word is in common usage in Oz, even in polite company. A bit like the phrase 'banana-bender' to describe Queenslanders. Perhaps the odd French national would be offended, but you'll struggle to find many Aussies who will care.

Let's just agree to disagree. Seeking censorship of my earlier entry was a much more serious issue in my view. The fact that the moderators went with you was disappointing, but then you are a regular poster. Your hypothetical reference to French rugby players was inapproriate, as it implied they are prone to violence.

Chill buddy, and thanks for your response.

        • That does not bode well for Australian society. Again, to give you an example on that level: just because many flies eat s..t does not mean that its taste is great and we should all eat it.
If the "F" word is used then that company is not polite but likes to think of themselves as polite but really are just "poseurs".
I do find a lot of Aussies who find offence at being called convicts while you will find that French people would not care if you called Aussies that.
The point is, in a multicultural society, some consideration needs to be taken towards other people's feelings.
I think most rugby players or men would convince you in a certain way if you were with him in a dark alley and there were no witnesses - that is not limited to nationality. The point was that you would not dare to say that word in that instance - if it was OK you still would but the fact you would not means you know it is offensive and can make people angry. That was the point.
Don't worry - I am all for free speech but unfortunately in a country where people get upset about the word "vagina" being mentioned in an ad for sanitary products I do not think that will ever be possible. Plus, potentially racially charged words are excepted from that anyway. Try talking about "bombs" in e-mails to friends in the Middle East who are about to fly to America. See how quickly you get a visit from enforcement agencies. Not even the country with the greatest free speech provisions makes those provisions absolute.
So, please, just say French people (it won't cost you anything and will prevent upsetting other people) and all will be happy.

        • I'm a little incredulous that you've chosen to repeat the French rugby player line…

There are plenty of cogent arguments either side of this equation, but argument via hypothetical scenario is no argument at all.

          Anyway, i'm with Boris:
          http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/borisjohnson/8…

          Yours sincerely,

          Convict Scum.

        • Yup, sure as if the British media and Boris Johnson are setting the standards for you to abide by. I guess you think hacking mobile phones is OK then, too and declaring a Blitzkrieg on Germany when the English football loses another games on penalties against Germany.
You should talk to people affected by this.
For example, I know someone who liked another person who happened to be German. She called him a NAzi thinking it was oh so cute. Guess what happened. Neither he nor his friends found that funny and neither of them ever talked to the girl again.
Some people and countries take this quite seriously - in Germany those things are a criminal offense in order to demonstrate the gravity of this (and please do not start on discussing that yet - there it is a law, the majority of 84 million people agree on it, so the chances are there is some merit to it).

If you are prepared to call a Frenchman who is bigger than you a "F…" when you are in danger of getting the "s…" beaten out of you for it, then I will respect you and then you have earned the right to say it (although morally it would still be wrong).

        • Frog.
          That's the 'f' word.

          Frog.
          Froggie.

          Don't mention the war.

    • Ever considered that European prices include almost 20%VAT which will be taken off? Also, postage needs to be included to compare properly.
