Are Snap on Car Window Shades Legal?

Is it legal to use the snap on window shades? If so, do you have recommendations on what would be a good brand to use? I see facebook ads for snapshades and the videos seem compelling.

Bought mine off Ebay. $80 for both sides, vs $220 or so from snap shades. Working well so far.

    • Thanks, I was thinking of buying the snapshades ones, but $150 for 2 rear seemed too much for my tight ass and I didn't think to check ebay. 😳

I'll likely get 2 for $50 from ebay thanks to your comment.

I wonder if they are a comparable quality, but I guess that's why they could be cheaper on ebay.

Eg Snapshades say they block about 85% UV rays, most listings in ebay I looked at for my car don't even list a figure, only one said 75%.

you can get cheap tints even with clear 95% vlt that filters out 99% uv , regardless if terrible on tser value

correct me if i'm wrong but i think window glasses / windscreen on certain cars came factory treated to cut uv

that shades with different uv block rate probably to do with density of holes on the shades that also affects vlt

these branded shades are cut throat , i've seen these non-branded but still car specific sized magnetic shades 1set 4pcs front rear for equivalent of AUD$10 abroad in SEA region

        • Oh yeah, I do have tinting on mine, NFI what UV it blocks though 😳

Which listing or brand did you buy? Is it a very good fit?

I have noticed certain demographics of drivers using shades on front side windows while driving… like wtf

    • Woah. These ones at least let you see the side mirrors 😂

    • I find the full-sized 4WDs/vans that have obviously been converted for camping/full-time living with their back and sometimes rear side windows completely blacked out to be worse as they've usually fully covered the windows with reflective foil or some kind of custom sunshade that not only blocks their rearward visibility but blinds other drivers with reflected light as well.

  • Heck the local rules on visible light transmission for particular car windows (window tint rules). They won’t be legal on the front, but likely anything behind the front doors are legal to blockout.

Also keep in mind that anything you do to block windows for sun comimg in will make it harder to see out of which may increase your risk, particularly the risk of pulling out in front of someone at night.

particularly the risk of pulling out in front of someone at night.

generally more likely than during the daytime, unless you're more an 'afternoon delight' kind of person…

  • I was always skeptical about snapshades but they are pretty neat - compared the cheapy generics I got from ebay and amazon:

    Snapshades:
Exactly sized to car and even has little mini sections for the funny shaped windows like in our rav4

    Can put windows down

Noticeably does cut down light compared to the generics

I would wait for a sale though they are pretty expensive!

    • Sigh, now I am back on the fence.

The sales have only gone up to 20% off as far as I can see, which is still very exy!

      • If it makes you feel better my misso paid full rrp 🥲

      • Email them and offer to do a youtube review. Call yourself Shadey Character.(don't use Slim, you'll get sued) It seems every man and his dog gets free shite this way

Just get F1 Window tint mate. On all windows, 99% uv blocks, keep the heat out, lets light in, safe to drive in at night; the best tint I've ever owned. $450 on my Mazda 3.
