Accessing Foxtel Using a VPN from The USA

I am going on a 5 week trip through the US and wanted to be able to watch a few AFL games on my laptop while I'm away.
I got Surfshark to do this and had a week in Thailand last week and there was no way to access Foxtel despite trying all 5 Australian servers.

Anyone know a way around this???

Cheers

  • Yeah my experience a couple years back is that Foxtel is very well aware of VPN termination points used in Australia and blocks them. My home router was able to terminate a VPN though so was able to use that and appear to be back in Australia but not 100% reliable.

Foxtel website (dot com dot au) won't even load on my browser/s if I am using a VPN……….horrible company

        Yep same.

Ltt did a vid recently about routing traffic through your home as a way of bypassing Netflix's new rules. I'm sure that would work for this

  • Surfshark only have 5 Aussie servers?

    Nord has 172 in Aus

    • They have 5 locations you can choose from (Syd, Mel, Bris, Perth & Adel), which is what I think the OP is referring to. I imagine the number of actual servers is significantly higher.

  • Not for Foxtel in particular, but this script is great to see if other streaming services are available from your IP

  • OP can you set up you home modem as a VPN server? That should work.

    • Can anyone shoot me a guide on how to do this?

      • What modem do you have. Most half decent ones can support it.

    • Not all routers can do this. Might be a easier to recommend pivpn. Easy to setup on a raspberry pi or any device with docker. Huge community and plenty of instructional videos.

Make sure you go before they pass the 'restrict act'…really dodgy stuff including massive extortion and even jail for having a VPN.

No one in the USA is going to prison for having a VPN. Take off your tinfoil hat.

Just use https://www.watchafl.com.au/ they've done Deals with Foxtel and the AFL for streaming overseas so have the rights to all the games.
    Plus the Fox Footy content.
Besides Apart from wanting the AFL US cable TV and Netflix has more content then the Australian networks anyway.
Though the Foxtel now app has a lot more content then it used to.

    • I will probably wind up using that, but the principle of paying for something twice really annoys me. I already will be paying for my Foxtel service that I can't use and have to pay this on top to watch football while I'm away.

      • Can you pause your .au Foxtel for the 5 weeks that you are away?

If your under contract to Foxtel rather then using their Foxtel Now service maybe talk to them to see if they have a deal where they can include a few weeks worth of the overseas streaming service?
As I know they include the ability to stream content locally with the contracted subscription.

  • I cannot speak to how it would work with the AFL but I do know that I had no problems with Kayo while I was in SE Asia.
Watched F1 qualifying in a hotel and Supercars on a train in Malaysia, used Surfshark as the VPN. No problems at all. Maybe pick up a Kayo share for a month?
