Security/IP Camera Suggestions for Home Assistant (for Both Internal & External)

Hi, I am fully invested in Home Assistant and have integrated few sensors, solar system, smart plugs etc.

I am looking at security cameras around the house (aprox 4) and also internal/IP cameras to keep an eye on the pet when we are away (4 of these too).

The goal is to have local only feed, so if the camera has cloud sharing option than i should be able to turn that off.

Let me know if anyone has integrated cameras with HA and have suggestions or recommendations. Also I am price conscious so not looking for high end stuff.

Thanks for your recommendations.

  • HA can integrate with any Camera, I even integrated with Ring, more info

I only have Eufy Doorbell which I wouldn’t recommend (privacy issues, not accessible offline).

The YouTuber The Hookup seems to really like Reolink for value for money. Heres a review he did of 6 POE cameras under US$50. He is a Home Assistant user, has heaps of other camera reviews, and is knowledgeable and methodical in his testing. Reolink seems to often come out at or near the top for bang for buck. Reolink also have a recently added (modern & supported) Home Assistant integration.

The Reolink doorbell is also on Scrypted’s recommended list, if that is relevant to you.

^^^ 2nd This. Home Assistant will work with most cameras. But Reolink cameras are easily the best bang for buck.

Using Reolink 410s & 520s with frigate, works great. Try to use POE rather than WiFi if you can manage the cable routing.

Just make sure you block the camera access to the internet in your router and run everything locally to the Home Assistant.

  • If you are comfortable with tech I would recommend any camera that supports rtsp combined with frigate software and a Google Coral for object detection.
It instantly integrated into HASS and I have created elaborate automations based on zones and detecting certain types of things in them.
My favourite camera sofar has been Reolink based on the recommendation from the Hookup

  • Thanks all for you suggestions. it seems Reolink is highly recommended and the way to go for me.

looking at all Reolink cameras on their ebay site i find RLC-410A (5MP PoE IP Camera with Person/Vehicle Detection) attractive option for me. these are 2K and unlike their latest 4K offerings seems as at a good price point. I am price conscious as i am buying 4 of these.

Checking if anyone has used them or have any feedback or comments on the them.

    • Yeah I run 3 of these, have been good, not the best at night but can still make out faces. Biggest PITA is the spiderwebs reflecting the IR LEDs, apparently spiders are attracted to the warm LEDs in cameras. 2K is a little easier on the processor if your using frigate with detection. Just be aware that depending on your HA hardware you will likely need to add a Coral AI if your going to do any object detection with this many cameras on Frigate. Really depends on your setup and the amount of spare processing you have.

      • Thanks, will look at Frigate and Coral AI.
Processing requirement should not be an issue as i have HA on a windows i7 server.
what do you have for PoE, any recommendations on that?

I would add that I've had compatibility problems between reolink and frigate. Note, frigate will NOT work with reolink 4k cameras at 4k resolution as it doesn't play nice with the h.265 encoding. You need to kick the res down to 5MP to get it to work again. So if frigate is your end game, don't bother buying 8MP range unless this changes. The other cameras were really finicky to configure anyway requiring lots of test and reiterate.

Check the frigate docs for recommended camera brands but the last I recall, it as Dahua and hikvision.
