Tablet or NetBook?

Is it worth buying a tablet vs a mini net book? I really like the Asus tablet and a friend of mine highly recommends their laptops.. I want a portable home computer without the bulk of a laptop and without being limited on speed and memory and be able to still do thing like creating power points and word documents etc., will the Asus transformer tablet be able to do this or will it already be outdated by the time I purchase it and the next android comes out and makes it obsolete? Is a net book a better option? I also only really like the Asus because it has a keyboard dock..

If you want to get actual work done (word processing/ Excel / Powerpoint) you do need a laptop. The office applications on Android are usually quite basic and won't produce documents on the level that you can do with MS Office.

That's it really — tablets are devices for media consumption. Laptops are devices for work (and play, though it requires you to sit down at a desk to do so).

If your priorities are media consumption over officework, then the tablet would make the better choice.

      +1 to what he said.

Reply with one sentence to an email? yep - tablet is fine.

Doing anything longer than one sentence? need a laptop

  • As far as tablets go… Is the Asus nexus 7 any good? In your opinion if u kno about it?

I like asus, but 7" is quite small. I'd only get that size if you're going to watch vids only

  • Damn it only has a micro usb port.. Do any tablets have normal usb ports like ones for use with regular usb sticks.. Technology is confusing and difficult

    • no need sir. i bought a micro usb to usb host for 1 dolla only. on ebay.
+ it would look rather ugly on the tablet with a big hole on the side.

  • I don't mind a small screen or typing on a touch but something that allows me to plug in a usb stick without carrying around extra connectors would be useful is such a tab exists?

yep, acer iconia has one, generally they're a bit thicker because of the full size usb port

The toshiba tablet (slow, but cheaper) and the Asus transformers (on the keyboard dock) also have USB ports. Or, if it's not urgent, you could wait for the Microsoft Surface, but the Windows 8 model will most likely be a bit pricey. If you need to do a lot of typing, I'd look at an Ultrabook instead of a netbook. You can find them every now and then for about $600-$700. Most people find the keyboards on netbooks are a bit small to do a lot of typing on but YMMV.

just wanted to emphasise that you need to spend the extra money on the dock to get the usb ports. The tablet by itself does not have a usb port

  • Thanks guys. I will research the Microsoft surface and the Samsung slate options for now. I may stalk you down at a later date to get your opinions on those as well!!! Thanks again..

  • Suggestions are that Microsoft is going to low-ball the price of the Surface when it hits the market and pitch the lowest model at the Nexus 7. Some in the USA have reported a $299 price and some even $199. Might be good idea to wait.
The thing could have potential. People knock the current Windows phone OS but has anyone tried out a Nokia 800? They are pretty damn fast…

    • That's… unexpected. I was under the impression that Microsoft Surface was going to a premium product aimed directly at the iPad crowd, so priced between $500~600.

If they do low-ball the price, it's unlikely they're going to make any money on the tablet itself. Sounds like they're copying the Nexus 7 strategy…. but with some very big risks.

  • IT'S TOO LATE!!! .. OzBargain forced me to buy to acer iconic 500. With its awesome usb port and it's ICS update I couldn't refuse
