I was looking for a cheap flashlight with a nice CREE LED that would ship quickly from Amazon and came across this Bluefire 1100 'Diving Flashlight' on Amazon.

It is fluro yello in colour, and comes with a lanyard, velcro strap, removable 3xAAA battery holder, and some spare o-rings.

I was able to insert a standard 18650 battery inside it (as an alternative to the 3xAAAs), and it worked perfectly.

The screw cap on the end is used to turn the tourch on/off and switch between the 3 modes of operation (strobe, low-power, full-power).

There is potentially better deals to be had on places like Aliexpress for a few bucks less - but this shipped/arrived next day for me.

I've got no idea how this functions underwater and don't plan to do so - I wouldn't rely on it though!

There is no focus mechanism on the beam, and the beam itself is pretty narrow - so good for targeting objects, but not good for flooding an area with light.

I've used one of these for a night dive before (borrowed from the dive shop). Worked fine for me.

A lot of the lower rating reviews are mainly because people may not know that some dive torches have a twist function to turn on (as oppose to a push button) and change the brightness and you're meant to do this before you enter the water, not when you're already submerged.

I've had one and used underwater several times.
No problems well to 10 metres

This intrigues me. Is this some sort of hack via manipulation of the existing metal contacts, or are you just shoving an 18650 in? Is this a common alternative for products that use 3x AAA (assuming they're arranged alongside each other in a triangle)?

      Just shove the 18650 in

The three aaa fit in a holder

      • I've just tried it in a cheapie alum torch but the 18650 is too long so can't screw the end on
        .

I suppose it depends on the shape/size of the original AAA holder.

How exciting, I'm gonna look out for stuff to put 18650s in now, to convert non-rechargeable to rechargeable haha

          • @andresampras: Not all equipment will function on the lower voltage of a single 18650 compared to three series AAA's.

            • @Blacklite: I though 18650 was 3.7V, 3xAAA rechargeable is 3.6V

              • @Jackson: Yes… but alkaline AAA is 1.5V, so 4.5V for three in series.

                • @Blacklite: Yeah but it's typically within tolerances to use rechargeables, esp since it's only a torch

        • Some 18650s are 'protected', they have different components that make them slightly too long for certain devices.

The removable AAAs plastic holder has a spring loaded button/pin on the end about 3/4cm in length that extends the size of the pack to similar length dimensions of that of an 18650. The torch itself is thus designed to accommodate an 18650 in length.
The 18650 cell is 18 mm in diameter and 65 mm tall. I'd say the included AAA battery pack is more like 22mm in diameter. So you could potentially pad the 18650 cell a little to stop any jiggle.

      • Cool thanks for the detailed post

  • Price now showing as $32.99

    • That's for a 2x pack, do maybe it's still a good deal?

Edit: 20% coupon applied to one item per order at checkout bringing the 2 pack down to $26.40
