Cost of Braces for Kids These Days?

Hey all,

Just curious what the going rate for braces is for kids these days? My son is 12 and needs braces in Melbourne. (i did search the forum though all the other posts are pretty old..)

First quote is $8950 includes - extra $750 for white ceramic ones.

• Placement of the braces and all adjustment appointments.
• Removal of the braces and provision of retainers.
• 12 months of post treatment supervision

Says he will need them for about 2 years.

Thoughts? Is this reasonable?

Thank you

From memory it cost us about $6000 about 10 years ago for my daughter that was about 13 . Every one is different of course.

    • SA $6500 (-10% if paid upfront), around 6-8 years ago (3 children)
      .

Mine were $9000 about 20 years ago.
I was quoted $8000 for my 12 yr old (but that is with a "discount" because I already paid $5000 for palate expanders).

Anything around the $9k mark and 2yr time frame is normal.

Edit: In Sydney. Not sure about other states/territories

    • Sounds similar to our daughter
      in Melb.

  • I had braces over 25 years ago at a cost of $4800. Rough CPI would put that figure at about the $8000-$9000 you got quoted.

How much were you thinking they'd cost?

As an aside to other parents, I was told by the orthodontist that to assist with mitigating the need for braces, kids could be brought into the clinic once their adult teeth come through and they can possibly remove some teeth to make space for the remainder to grow straight. In some cases, crooked teeth are the result of not enough space for the teeth to move around/grow. Do your own research though - this is just something that was told to me.

    • I had 4 teeth pulled but still needed braces. I'm not an orthodontist, but I suspect you would still need braces to align the teeth, close the gaps of the missing teeth, and allow enough room for wisdom teeth to grow.

      • Ya no doubt the age of the person would be important to. Not saying the information will work in all situations, it's just something that was said to me and (at a guess) possibly only applies to kids with new adult teeth, not wisdom teeth.

Zero. Wait until they are 18 and make it a them problem.

    • And have a hellish time through highschool?

      • +1

That depends on whose teeth the kid inherits.

Depends on complexity, any extractions etc

But should be less given Invisalign has become very popular and the patent ended quite recently. In fact, you should probably try get the kid on Invisalign if possible.

  • has anyone tried to claim braces thru private health insurance? is it worth the wait times/hoops in order to claim?

    • I don't recall the wait time but it is the reason we initially signed up for extras; 3 children all had crooked teeth
      .

has anyone tried to claim braces thru private health insurance?

yes, we got about $2,500 back per child.

We're in Sydney and was around $7k. The payment plan runs over 2 years so it made sense to go for the highest private plan, wait the 12 months and then put the 2nd year's payments through as that would still hit the lifetime cap anyway. We asked about ceramic but dentist advised that traditional was preferred due to the extra cost of ceramics and the chance of ceramics cracking/breaking. Not sure whether that is true or not but given she was talking us out of paying more it seemed reasonable to me. Results for both adult and child family member has been fantastic within the initial 3 months.

    • Depends on the insurance company and policy level.

I signed up specifically for braces/expanders:
      - Teachers health top cover
      - 12mth waiting period
      - After 12 months, you can claim the full $2500

However, other companies have different waiting periods (usually 12mths) and can only claim X amount per year (with a lifetime limit of $2500)

Depending on your health plan, it often makes sense to start orthodontics in the 2nd half of a calendar year. Most orthodontic plans run 18-30 months so by starting later in the year, the costs can be spread over 3 calendar years for private health plan claiming purposes. I have a corporate plan so my lifetime cap is quite high - but will vary for other plans

  • Can also do ceramic ontop and bottom basic silver etc

  • First quote is $8950 includes -

    That sounds about right…

    We went with Invisalign.

    • how did you find invisalign? how old was the person?

        16yo finishing soon.
14yo just started a couple of months back.

        Happy with the results.

Just the top with ceramic was approx $4500 in June 2021 for myself. My brother has recently had top and bottom put on (ceramic top) and it was about $8000-$8500 including family discount.

  • I got mine done in 2015. I remember it costed $4500 for the whole thing paid in installments with each tightening. This was without any health insurance. No teeth pulled out either.

I work for an orthodontist, and that price sounds roughly correct. It depends on variables such as how much correction needs to be done, length of treatment, etc.

  • I got quoted $7250 for 18 months plan. We have private health so I'll start my child's treatment mid year so I can maximise the claim in 3 calendar years up to the max we can claim ($2100). As a parent you just accept it's going to cost a fortune to have kids and grit your teeth and get on with it.

    $8k NSW 5 yrs ago

  • Cheaper to get them bigger lips these days

    • I guess that's true. Sounds so upside down.

  • 7K-8K for clear aligner is what i heard. You can try google bayswater station dental and get a quote if its close to you.

  • I'm currently getting my teeth aligned. A bit of back and forth with research but ended up with Smile Avenue in Blackburn. The orthodontist does seem to do a decent amount of kids. I was quoted around 6-6.5k for wired braces, not sure if it is any different for kids. Went with aligners in the end for around 7.2-7.5k.
