Fly to USA and Trans-Pacific Cruise back help needed

Hi OzB!

Looking for some help with a Sydney-LA-Hawaii Cruise back -Sydney ( trip for September/October 2023)

Preferred option is:
Fly Syd to LA, then LA to Hawaii
then cruise from Hawaii October 10 back to Sydney (Royal Carribean)https://www.royalcaribbean.com/aus/en/cruises/itinerary/18-night-transpacific-from-oahu-on-ovation/OV18HNL-503859041?sail-date=2023-10-15&currency=AUD&country=AUS&dates_maxDate=10%2F31%2F2023&dates_minDate=10%2F01%2F2023&ecid=sl_mdt_shrdln__4645

We are a family of 6 so i'm looking for some good tips and recommendations to save where i can.

Kids ages are 12, 14, 18, 21. Shopping, experiences and theme parks are the agenda.

Thanks in advance.

Have you considered heading over to Orlando and skipping the cruise? Your party will enjoy way more theme parks and shopping for the same overall spend. I've been to Walt Disney World five times and Universal Orlando once.

    • Would be better off flying return to Miami or Orlando. Visit the theme Parks, then do a Caribbean cruise out of Miami.

i concur, they could do a 3 or 4 night Bahamian cruise with Disney and enjoy more time at the theme & water parks. The Royal Caribbean trans-pacific cruise looks to be about $15K

      • Royal Carribean unfortunately dont go from Miami to Sydney

Your cruise date isn't flexible, so you have to be in Hawaii by that date, maybe a few days before hand to play it safe if you are not planning to hang out in Hawaii.

Basically not many ways to save money for a party of 6, your dates to fly to LA and Hawaii are flexible so look around and see if it is cheaper to fly earlier or later to what you roughly had planned.

Yikes, family of 6 heading to Disney Land……and other theme parks. Sounds like a 6 figure holiday!

    • definitely a 5 figure holiday!
But accommodation and food in the USA for would add up quicker than the same time cruising back i think

On one trip we did 14-nights in Orlando with a 10-day Disney World pass. The accommodation and food costs were the same as if we'd gone to the Goldy, just need to add the cost of park tickets (expensive!), rental car and parking. I agree the cruise cost for the size of your party is quite good and also includes the transportation.

    • Be bold, JV

      • Bold, but not silly…

    Leave the kids at home

    • Probably cheaper to leave my wife at home.

      • Why?

        • The credit card damage would be fatal

          • @GLO: You cannot be miserly on holiday

  • Here's a link to some vloggers heading from Sydney to Honolulu on Ovation of the Seas

  • Would also been keen on a cheaper way heading back on Royal.

Flying to USA and then to Hawaii, it'll probably be cheaper if you have airlines points (ie Qantas Classic Reward flights) as they won't penalize you for going one way.

    • Interesting point re Qantas Classic points
