If you open the door straight away without it burning you, then it's fine. If it burns you, not so fine.

If there was a large risk from just opening the door I would like to think it would be locked like a front load washing machine, until the microwaves were stopped by the timer back to 0 either manually or just timed out.

I've never used a mechanical dial microwave before and i ain't gonna buy a new 1 to replace someone's else airbnb microwave.

Any which way will stop and door can safely be opened anytime.
Run it empty and the magnetron will suffer premature wear.
Leaving a copy of a manual is pretty well standard practise in every Airbnb. They are usually found on the net.
