Extending KrisFlyer Lifetime and Redeem

Hi all, got informed by my bank that I will need to cancel my Citi Prestige card to get my pre-approval done.
There are quite some points sitting in my Rewards and figure out swapping to them Kris Flyer Miles is the most efficient way to go. But the thing is I could never know if we are travelling in the next 2.5 year or so and the Miles only last 3 years.
I understand I can swap the Miles to Velocity, so the question is; if I don't get to use my Miles in the 2.8 years can I transfer them to Velocity and back to Kris Flyer to "extend" its lifespan?

I also played around Redeeming flights and found most of the flights are on Waitlist, what's your experience booked through the flight which you were on Waitlist?

Thanks!!

EDIT:
Appreciate all the comments guys!!
I think going Velocity direct will be the way to go, as all flights I found are on Waitlist on Kris…..

Couldn't find any info about if we can redeem flight with Velocity for someone else. Has anyone done it before?

Transfers from KF to Velocity are 1:55 to 1 each way. So if you had 155 KF points, you will get 100 Velocity, and when you transfer back, it becomes 65 KF.

The way to "extend" the KF points are:
    - If you haven't used your points close to the end of 3 years, you can still book flights up to 11 months ahead. So if you redeem them for a flight 11 months in the future, technically your flight is up to 3y 11m in the future.
    - Or, just transfer them from Citi to Velocity directly instead. This way your points won't expire and you can use Velocity to redeem SQ flights directly, albeit with slightly less availability and a carrier service charge. But still, gives flexibility in holding points indefinitely. I've recently used Velocity points to redeem a bunch of SQ to south east asia flights and found them very cheaply priced

For redeeming premium flights (Biz/First), you would have to book 10-11 months out for peak periods, and even then, weekend flights are usually booked/priced out. For non peak periods, usually 5-7 months in advance is good. If you can't find availability on the SQ route you want, then try other cities around the continent (Manchester versus London, Zurich versus Paris, Amsterdam v Copenhagen etc.).

For Waitlist, I've almost never heard it clearing unless your status was Gold or above. And even then, it's uncertain when you find out (from 6 months to 6 days in advance).

You can transfer from Krisflyer to Velocity to Krisflyer but keep the conversion rate in mind. It is 1.55 to 1 in both directions. So if you started off with 100,000 Krisflyer miles this will turn into 64,516 Velocity points which will turn into 41,623 Krisflyer miles. It will achieve your goal of extending the Krisflyer miles though.

Waitlist flights are tricky. I have not observed a pattern of which flights do or don't clear the waitlist. It truly is quite random.

If you have no specific travel plans I highly recommend parking your points in Velocity and not Krisflyer.

For a small price of 1,200 points, you can extend the expiration of 10,000 points by 6 months (12 months if you have any status).

Just go with Velocity, there's 15% bonus right now and you can redeem Qatar also

Your chance of getting the waitlisted flights to clear is not very reliable. I've had a couple that clear within a few days that I waitlisted the flights, but many others cleared only 2-3 weeks before the actual flight. Economy class waitlist and advantage fare redemption have better chance, but for business & first class waitlist on saver is almost impossible.
Overall, I think my clearance rate was about 30%, and a few of them were only done partially too (the connecting flights were still on waitlist).

    • And if it doesn't clear - what you need to find another flight last minute?
