Optus 5G Modem

Hi all,

I upgraded my service with Optus to 5G service which guaranty a great 200+ Mbps speed VS the old NBN.

Everything is great however one issue I have faced with it and it's related to connecting a netgear modem to the 5G Modem "Nokia brand"

I have Swann cameras which are located on my second story house and require internet connection to make it work online and view my cameras. Before the 5G, i had a netgear modem that is connected to the Camera box through Cat5 cable and then it pick the signal from my NBN modem.

Since the upgrade, the modem can't connect to the 5G. I checked with Optus and they confirmed 5G modems not compatible with Netgear modem.

Anyone faced similar issue with the 5G modem? What are the other brands that I can use to connect to the Nokia 5G modem?

  • Nokia fastmile has 2.4/5gz … Should work with existing setup once configured?..

I think it is probably a good idea to distinguish the difference between modem, router and NBN terminal, and rephrase your question again.

Why are you trying to connect 2 modems together !? Lol

    Very weird.

    You only need 1 modem.

If it is not a modem router, then add a router (usually wireless) to the modem

    • Why are you trying to connect 2 modems together !? Lol

This, I suspect, is why it doesn't work for the OP. Because he's plugged one modem into another.

Sounds like the Netgear was setup as an access point in the previous setup.

  • Can you move your 5G router near the Swann and run an ethernet cable?

    • I tried to but it doesn't detect the 5G signal and change to 4G which is slower.

  • Hi all,

I appreciate all the response, let me rephrase my question.

I have swann cameras that can not connect through WIFI and need to be plugged in a router. They located second floor and my 5G modem is downstairs. So what i did, I bought a Netgear Extender/Access point that is connected to my internet router and the camera dvr box connected to it.

It used to be working perfectly with my old NBN router. Since i got the 5G, it stop connecting to it.

    Hope this clarify it.

can your computer/phone connect to internet via that Netgear AP?

if no: something's wrong with your AP setup.

if yes: The most possible cause is that 5G internet is always behind CG-NAT, and your camera can not be accessed from outside without some sort of Tunneling or Reverse Proxy.

      • I think it's the "wireless bridge" between Modem and Extender that is the issue at the moment.
But yeah, CG-NAT might be the next issue.

  • Since i got the 5G, it stop connecting to it.

Check your network configuration on both ends…

    Netgear AP model?

    • The netgear setup should be easy. You go to the setting and connect to the wireless network normally.

When i do that, it detect the Nokia 5G router but can't connect to it!

Using the default SSID and password on the base of the Nokia?
        Same security/authentication on both ends?

  • Change the Nokia WiFi SSID and WiFi Password to the same as that of your previous modem.

    • I did, it can see it but can't connect to it. I am searching online and seems there is an issue between these rotuers.

      • Is band steering enabled?
        If so disable it.

  • It's Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway btw

  • This may work : Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway - > wired connection to your old NBN router - > wireless to Netgear access point.
Whats the old NBM router model?

  • What do you mean by "and then it pick the signal from my NBN modem." is that CAT5 or Wifi and if Wifi is it 2.4 or 5GHZ and have you updated the SSID and passwords?

Optus support will always say that other equipment is the problem as they are script monkeys and can only read from a web page they look up and if it is not in the scrip the standard is your equipment is not compatible. I got a free huawei 4G B818 modem as their Netgear 810S would not work reliably (3K download) when their Mobile tower band B40 failed and they had no idea what the problem was and they never called back. Make a formal complaint via their web site and then you may hopefully get somewhere.

  • Your Netgear router settings might be incorrect, It may like be configured to connect to NOKIA 5G MODEM using your ISP passwords or protocols.

I use NOKIA 5G MODEM and combine it with GL inet router.

In GL inet router I Have to change ethernet setup as WAN.
and ensure it has no ISP user name or passwords in there using different connection methods.

Also Ethernet setup should be DHCP I think, AND MAKE SURE Ethernet from NOKIA MODEM is COMING FROM WAN port, (NOT from LAN).

THEN ethernet connected to WAN on router (usually same as where you used to put the Ethernet with NBN)

Also first ensure that you have internet @ NOKIA 5G ROUTER
test it by connecting to that WIFI/ethernet first directly from NOKIA using laptop/phone

then check WIFI/ethernet from your NETGEAR router using laptop/phone

If the BOTH WIFI/ethenet doesn't work, then you likely have APN settings problem. (I could probably find COLES/OPTUS NETWORK APN settings with NOKIA 5G MODEM)

If problem only with Netgear wifi/ethernet you may have different settings on netgear modem needing change MOST LIKELY PPoE/Static to DHCP

  • Ok all, thanks for your answer.

I will get all details and re-write everything here with photos if possible
