Telstra International Roaming - Daily Data Limits

Have just arrived in Singapore (in transit) and my Telstra Roaming kicked in and connected to a local network wigthout an issue.
Telstra Roaming is $10 a day and includes 1GB each day, over that and you pay extra.

I have only been here two hours and already I have a message that I have used up 50% of my daily limit (500MB).

I have only checked emails (no big attachments in the new emails I received since arriving) and visited basic news and sports sites. There is no way I have used up 500MB already .. or have I? I have now switched to the lounge wifi (with VPN).

Anyone else had this problem, and have even questioned Telstra about it?

Seems to be a rort so far, but I am happy to be proved wrong if I have actually used that amount.

I have roamed overseas many times before covid with Vodafone, which was $5 a day and data was no issue.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Changi has pretty good free wifi so not sure why you are wasting your roaming data.

    • Yes, as I said I have now switched to the free wifi, but up to that point I didn't think that data usage was going to be an issue

Very easy for data leakage on smartphones these days.

iPhone or Android? You can see the data usage (active and background) in the settings.

500MB is not unbelievable - a few app updates if it's auto enabled, a (few) videos/clips on these sports sites that auto play, social media refresh etc

    • Thank you … It was probably the auto app update. I will turn this off while I am away

  • From experience I have to turn off background data as there is stuff that just happens. Also make sure things like video auto play is turned off for twitter/face/instagram etc.

However, if you go over it's "only" $10/gigabyte so not the worst (half an airport beer!)

  • Just check in your settings what apps or services used how much data in the last X hours and you will see what chews up your data.

App updates? Automated video or audio downloads? Pron?

    • Haven't watched any Pron … yet :)

  • On iOS you can enable low data mode which disables auto download and caching of frequently accessed websites

  • Have just arrived in Singapore

Do you have recommendations for the best place to get Singapore Noodles there?

    • I think you actually can't find "Singapore Noodles" in Singapore…

      • They just call them, “noodles”.

    Stop commenting then !!!!!!!!!!

  • I was overseas for 32 days, bought local sim card but needed 2 credit cards 2fa on my oz number.
Telstra charged me $70 and forced me to watch 4hrs of their advertising before I could switch off their roaming.
All I got from $70 are 2 texts!

    • Don’t activate $10 day pass roaming to receive text message. Receiving text message while overseas is free.

      • I set it to off but as soon as the text came in I got a message that it was on and had to be manually turned off. On their $69 plan that it how they want it, NO overseas texts unless you pay $10. Turning it off took hours!

        • If Telstra's international roaming day pass is enabled on the account, Telstra will charge $10 automatically if there's roaming data used. Disabling international roaming day pass might not work immediately. My account has day pass enabled. In a recent overseas trip, while on airplane mode, I switched off international data roaming on my phone and also turned off data entirely. Turned off airplane mode, received 2FA text messages with no $10 day pass charged. I did this more than a couple of times during my trip and I managed to avoid day pass charges.

  • iOS shows you your roaming data usage. Does it conform or show less data used? It might be a delayed 50% text of your domestic data - does it expressly mention roaming daily data?

  • 500mb is nothing
