Snowy Mountain Trip in June with Overseas Visitors

Hi,

We have overseas come over and we are planning to bring them to the Snowy Mountain on June 20 to 22 so that they can see/enjoy the snow (real not machine generated as much as possible). They will not be skiing but just do tobogganing at most. There will be 7 adults and will be hiring a van for this trip.

It has been a while since I went to the Snowy and need advice on the following: (1) Which part of the Snowy should I bring them?; (2) place to stay at reasonable price; and (3) what do we need to bring with us?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

  • Those dates are at the start of ski season so accommodation will be pricey

I’ve not been yet, but I’d look at the renovated mt selwyn ski resort

Usually selwyn is a bit cheaper and less busy that Thredbo and Perisher and they are due to re-open after the bushfires damaged the lifts etc so should be nice new facilities

    • Thanks for the info. This is why there are no recent review RE Mt Selwyn Ski Resort. It would be good to see the renovated facilities. I have not been there for a long time.

The only negative that I read is that there might be no snow at the time that we will be going. They recommended to go to Perishers instead.

      • Yeah, snow that early at Selwyn is pretty sketchy.

There is accommodation in Adaminaby. But you can also find places right on Lake Eucumbene - a beautiful setting, in the middle of nowhere, costs plenty less than staying in town - IMO a cabin or two there will add something extra. Waking up on a chilly sunny morning and seeing the fog on the lake - great start to the day.

  • Where are you coming from? If Sydney then Selwyn is a good choice - some of the other resorts don’t even allow toboggans. Selwyn has a specific play area (you do have to pay for it) and you can hire everything you need. Remember the national park fee as well

However Selwyn itself isn’t very exciting (indeed, none of the resorts have much to do outside snow sports or drinking, although if there isn’t much snow you can wander around). Also there is no accommodation near Selwyn, which is ok but means you will need to drive 45 - 60 min to get there. You can either see if you can get an air BnB in a little village or random house or stay in Cooma or Tumut etc. TBH, you may find staying in canberra, driving up for the day and then back to canberra is all you need - tobogganing is fun for an hour or so but you won’t need more than a day if that is all you are doing

    • Thanks for the advice.

We will be coming from Sydney. Canberra is still about 3 hours to Selwyn. I will have a look what is the price difference between staying in Cooma versus in Canberra.

I probably need to sort-out first which part of Snowy should I bring them so that they can enjoy/see a real snow, if possible, during that period. I can then work-out the accommodation.

  • Don't forget the chains.

    • I don't have to do this before since I was driving a 4WD. I should learn to do this beforehand since I will be driving a van. I will probably hire them instead together with the clothing. Thanks!

  • Tobogganing has been banned in Thredbo. The other two obvious options in NSW are Perisher…..or Selwyn, it's far smaller than Perisher but they will have brand new facilities this season and cheaper if cutting costs is a major consideration. Real snow not machine generated here? Good luck. Staying at ski resorts during snow season at reasonable prices? Good luck. There are a few rather obscure snow areas outside the Snowy Mountains if all they want to do is Tobogganing.

    • Thanks for the advice.

It looks like that accommodation will be at least $900 but this will be outside of the ski resort which should be okay. It seems that the higher chance of getting snow at that time will be at Perisher based on discussion on other forums. However, Mt Selwyn is still a good option given that they have a new facility.

What sort of areas, and whereabouts?

  • If you take them on a hike be sure to warn them about drop bears.

    • Hahaha …

  • I stayed here…https://www.touchdowncottages.com/, a way out of Jindabyne. Really nice new cabins with a bushy location, $300/night for a 4 bed cabin at that time of year.

    • Great for Sydneysiders - couldn't get closer to the aerodrome if they tried!

    • Thank you for sharing. It looks like that they have a min of 5-night stay when booking online. I will give them a call if they can accommodate 2 nights only.

      • I think you can book less. I stayed 2 nights. They are very laid back and helpful. If you were booking 2 cabins it would be worth their while you would think…

  • I took my young son a few times for snow play in 2022. I’m not sure about Selwyn but there is a dedicated toboggan area at Perisher. I think it’s called Tubetown. Not patrolled or anything, just big hill for snow play and tobogganing.

It is at the back of the car park at Perisher, so to use the toilets/restaurants etc, you would have to cross the car park. You could park a lots of places along Kosciuszko Rd and play in the snow if you didn’t want to go all the way up to Perisher, but then you’d have no toilets or food options or places just to sit and relax indoors.

There is no tobogganing at Thredbo.

Others have mentioned Selwyn and the new reno so look up what they offer in terms of snow play and tobogganing.

    Have a blast!

    • Thanks for this. I was trying to look for this information in the Perisher Valley website earlier.

At this stage, I am inclining towards Perisher vs Mt Selwyn just because of the higher probability of snow in Perisher during the time that we will be there. Our overseas visitors will be there first time to see snow (hopefully).

  • With a Rental vehicle, you may need to check if you can drive above the snowline.

    • Thanks! Based on the information that I read, it seems to take effect from June 30. However, I still need to clarify this since there can be snow before that time and the insurance needed to make sure that I will be covered.

  • Hi Guys,

Thanks again for all your advice.

We finally decided on the Perisher Valley.

I was also able to book accommodation at the Sports and Recreation Centre for 4 bedrooms at $301 per night.

I still need some advice what clothing to bring and to hire, and where to hire them.

    Thanks again for the help.
