How Much Does a TAB Waiter earn?

I have just had a discussion with a mate and he said his brother is earning $38 an hour (+ any weekend penalty on top) working at TAB in Melbourne. The pay sounds really good and i’m tempted to reconsider my career path and be a waiter at TAB.

Basically, I started out at $28hour (with a finance degree) working in the finance industry. Now, i’m barely scrapping $35 + over-time here and there without OT pay. Sometimes, i have to bring work home with me. If being a TAB waiter could get me better pay and switch off my brain afterwork, it may be a better career choice.

Can anyone shed light on this? Or know the actual pay and condition working at TAB? Or being a supervisor or a manager at TAB? I heard the waiters may work long hours but at least they’re being compensated fairly for their time.

I have checked on Seek and most of the job listings for bartenders and waiters are showing ‘from $28 to $42’ in the ad.

Thanks!

I read on a forum (can't recall where) that they make about $38ph.

    $38 per hour

  • +1

    $42 p/h

Edit: I called the TAB & they confirmed that it's actually $41.99 p/h

    • +2

      including super?

      • +1

Could very well be and that could account for the difference in the hourly rates being quoted by other members.

        Thanks for making that clear!

        • +3

          it is $38/hr + 10.5% super = $41.99

  • +1

I think it would be around $38 per hour

  • +3

Is that $38p/h a casual rate? Because if so isn’t it closer to $31.75p/h at a full time rate?

    better career choice

A tab waiter would be a job choice.
You would assume the better career choice, which includes future career progression, would be remaining in finance and working on upskilling or employee jumping.
How long have you been in the 'finance industry' and what efforts have you made to improve your skills, employability, and higher paying possibilities?

  • +4

Are you on salary in the finance industry?
Tbh both are pretty low in the grand scheme and there would certainly be more upside in finance.
Depends obv on what sort of work you do. Can you give more detail?

    • I have compared my wage with other folks (with similar experience and skills) in my industry. Similar pay.

  • 38.88/h

I am in the finance industry.

$35 / hour represents upper entry level, do you have a plan or path to 'level up'?

The ceiling for TAB waiting is probably that $38.

The ceiling for TAB waiting is probably that $38.

Not if you get promoted to a Senior TAB waiter.

    • Yes, there’s a path way but I would need to acquire additional trainings/skills and a few more years of experience to earn more.

  • I heard that it could be approximately thirty eight dollars per hour.

I know someone that did a 1 yr tafe course and only wants the $80 ph Sunday work as a support worker in the NDIS . The course wasn't even a requirement :)

Get a degree they said, you'll make so much more money they said.

    • +2

I agree. Some of my mates did Tafe for a year or two and got into constructions and started earning $80k+ out of the bat and are now earning $100k+ in their late 20s. 3 of them bought a house by 25 or 26ish.

Meanwhile, I struggled to find work after uni and i’m struggling to save money for a house deposit at my income + renting.

      • That's probably the "free" market at work, supply and demand.

      • Pretty sad, but that's the problem when all people are told is "get a degree!". In some cases it is the best course of action, in others, not so much. The problem is, if everyone has a degree, there are too many people with degrees, and excess labour equals lower wages.

do you have a upgrade path in what your doing in finance to earn more?

    • Yes, but I would need to acquire additional trainings/certificates and a few more years of experience on top to break the 100k mark.

I’d still take that as a career option over working at a tab tbh. Where’s the career growth in that?

If you’re looking at those next steps with dread then maybe this is less about tab and more about you not liking finance…. are there any other skilled lateral moves you could try that still utilise your finance qualifications?

and switch off my brain afterwork

Did you seek help on this issue?

If outside help didn’t work for you, change your trajectory now and live your life.

Have you ever worked as a waiter? Very presumptuous of you to assume you'll just get a job as a TAB waiter.

  • +2

What the hell is a TAB waiter? I worked 18 years in hospo and now work for the company that owns TAB and I still don't know what that is? Is this a Melbourne thing?

    • +4

What the hell is a TAB waiter?

      They serve these in bars…

      • +1

        Seems legit.

  • +5

What kind of fancy ass TAB has waiters? Most of them have one or two people behind glass that only come out to replace the pencils and betting slips every so often. A big day would be getting their butt slapped by some octogenarian pervert after his 50c quadie on the dishlickers comes in.

I doubt even the manager is getting $38/hr, more likely the guy is just getting that much because he's employed as a casual. There is also zero career progression working at a TAB outlet, it is just like any other retail job except you cop even more abuse because people lose their money all the time.

I have serious doubts about how you graduated from university if you think working at a TAB outlet is a better long term career than finance. TAB outlets will all be gone within ten years as the old people who bet in person, and in cash (the use of which is already in rapid decline), will all be dead. Normal people bet online not in some dingy room with 20 TVs and a couple of pensioners.

    • And your thoughts on Chemist Warehouse?

      • +4

Is this Australia's Cheapest Chemist ?

Chemist Warehouse are not always cheapest but their advertising works and their cheap looking stores reinforce people's belief that the company cuts costs everywhere and that's how they keep prices low. CW marketing is actually really good.

My problem with chemists in general is the stupid rules about how only a pharmacist can own one and there's limits on how many can be in a certain area. The whole industry is a closed shop and I give CW some credit for increasing competition through lower prices on a lot of basic meds. At the end of the day CW is basically just a franchise operation in a highly restricted market.

As for working there? If you're not a pharmacist the job will just be regular retail with very little room to progress. You likely top out at store manager, probably on crap pay and heaps of unpaid overtime like the majority of other crappy retail management jobs.

    • I can't comment on Melbourne but here in QLD TAB is definitely closing outlets. Why pay for outlets when venues will literally pay TAB to have their equipment in them? Also massive push into digital.

      • Even some of those are being removed. My local largish RSL got rid of their TAB agency a few years ago because it cost more to run in licensing fees and staff costs than they ever made. Apparently most of the punters sitting there all day bet small amounts (the agency takes a percentage of every bet, that's how they make money) and didn't buy many drinks or anything else while they were there.

The lady that has the license for my local standalone TAB outlet said when they brought in the self serve terminals TAB didn't want to pay them the normal percentage of turnover even though the staff had to empty/fill it every day and do general maintenance. I don't know how they stay open as there is hardly ever anyone in there.

        • Don't forget the people who come in and watch the TV's and use the venue facilities but use their phones to bet but not the TAB app but other companies. At least if they use the TAB app in venue mode the venue gets a (small) cut, using another app the venue gets nothing.

Though I do get it. Other apps let you bet on all 3 states markets whereas TAB only lets you bet in your local market.

    What's the career progression?
    - Shemara Wikramanayake (Macquarie) $23.7m
    - Matt Comyn (CBA) $5.682M
    - Ross McEwan (NAB) $5.29M

    David Attenborough (Tabcorp) $3.7m.
TAB waiter $75k. I guess it's a lifestyle choice. Coming from finance, will you be happy with a job that requires you to park your brain at the door when you walk in?

    • Sometimes it would be nice to switch off the brain afterwork.

      • +1

Oh for sure but I couldn't deal with switching it off during work like that.

  • +3

    What is a TAB waiter?

    • I think TAB is similar to RSL in Sydney.

  • +1

Stick with finance a considerably easier job you will deal with less members of the public. I worked in hospitality decades ago and the sort of people you have to deal with is not worth it.

  • +1

The grass is always greener on the other side, pbly one of the first things I was taught by a senior tradesman. I guess it depends in what you want, working in the hospitality industry is pretty brutal, late, long hours and dealing with drunk customers. Have a look on seek or LinkedIn and move companies if you are not getting the pay you are after.

Dont ever get "comfortable" with your job, you have to constantly be on the lookout for opportunities, be proactive and reached out to potential job opportunities. Its how I managed to stay on the top dollar, by being an economic refugee. Im in a completely different industry but the above should also apply to you.

Networking and making connections are also a must in getting better jobs.

  • It’s TAB operator

  • Do they still have TABs? The last 100 times I put on a bet offline the barmaid handled it in between pouring beers. And that was a long time ago.
