Perth to Netherlands on a Budget

Looking at travel later in the year to the Netherlands (Utrecht / Amsterdam) with the family, pursuing a non-work opportunity my wife has.

Estimates are looking SO expensive

Any advice to make the trip burn less of a hole in the ol hip pocket (esp flights and accommodation)?

Have you considered flying to the UK and then to Amsterdam from there for cheap?

Have you checked the Malaysian fares to London?

Maybe Qantas direct from Perth to London, then maybe a cheap flight on easyjet to Amstetdam.

  • If you are big, you can use online forums for free accommodations

What are the dates? Is it the week before Christmas?

    • September this year

        How much were the estimates?
I can see $1700-2000 return to Amsterdam in September.

        • Skyscanner and a few others gave range between about 2-2400 per person return just last night

  • Travelling these days is extremely expensive.

Unless you find a really good discount the fares are very high compared to pre-COVID, and most flights are near full.

If they are not near full, I expect to get a flight cancellation message on my way to the airport.

hop over to Bali. Ferry and bus to Jakarta. Cheapest flight from there to mainland asia. Then you can drive the rest of the way.

  • Thanks all - hadn't considered going via UK

Scoot will get you from Perth to Berlin. Then find cheapest flight from there?

But maybe wait for a sale, depending how far away your travel date is.

Looks like they also fly to London via BKK…

Oil prices have been coming down so hopefully the flights will too.

  • Nothing to add except to say I'm really jealous. I spent a day in Amsterdam a few years back, as a shore excursion on a cruise, and it's a fascinating place. I'd love to go back and really explore.

  • A friend gave us the tip of buying tickets through the foreign version of whatever carrier's website. Ie the UK or Dutch version of Qatar airways' website.

Anyone have any experience with this and able to confirm if this works out cheaper?

Fly to Jakarta and use the Indonesian Qatar website.

Looking for similar flights to Amsterdam from Sydney atm. So far looks like flying to Paris or London first might be the best option.

Use google flights / iwanthatflight.com to compare.

  • We travel frequently from Per to Ams for family. Scoot is the cheapest in Sept one stop to Berlin. Check Qatar and Emirates as well as Singapore and KLM.My tip is to use trains in europe. You can go by Eurostar from London to Amsterdam, from paris by Thalys. Buy tickets in advance and they are cheap and much more convenient than any flight in Europe .There is a direct train from Berlin to Ams. The website seat61 is the best website you will find to explain everything about trains in Europe (or anywhere)and how to travel cheaply everywhere.
