  • $25 for 460g, is it a bargain?

    • +3

      No it's not

    • $54.35/kg, absolutely not a bargain at all.

    • I used to pay $18 for the same deal before covid.

      • You realise coffee is a traded commodity that has gone up by 100%
        since 2019 yeah?

        • +1

I have no complaints about $14/KG beans at Aldi

          • @AAN: Than that's your lane. Most people are happy drinking Johnny Red.

            • @Anders: @Anders expensive doesn't really mean better, Aldi's coffee roaster is victorian based company Black Bag Roasters

              https://www.foodmag.com.au/aldis-lazzio-coffee-awarded-the-2…

              • @AAN: Absolutely it doesn't. You can have terrific, expensive green coffee that is terribly roasted and terribly brewed, and surprise surprise, it'll taste like terrible coffee. But that coffee isn't any cheaper just because someone stuffed up, so someone is still wearing that cost, and it's often the consumer. It's a big problem, and why most people don't bother chasing quality because it's very easy to pay more, get less and feel burnt by that experience.

              • @AAN: Also, regarding Aldi, it won "Overall Large Chain Champion" and IMO supermarket/chain coffee is an incredibly low bar.

Also just because you can't/don't appreciate the difference between Aldi's beans and something more specialty, doesn't mean the difference is not there.

Nobody calls out a deal posted for Belgian beer when it's not as cheap as VB.

          • @AAN: Which beans do you prefer from Aldi?

        • No problem with that at all, but I just bought from Lime Blue and Inglewood for less $/kg.

    • If it's good coffee, absolutely. $25 for 250g is pretty standard for speciality coffee.

      • What is classified as good coffee? It's mostly marketing and perception! What's wrong with 7/11 coffee? What's wrong with Johny Red? You realise many local coffee shops buy their coffee bean at Aldi. Just ask the people who are working in Aldi then you know!

        • Firstly, there's the ethics of paying the people at origin a liveable wage. And paying those who produce great coffee a profitable one.

Then there's the fact that gap between commodity coffee and premium speciality coffee is stark if you start appreciating coffee without additives like milk or sugar. Coffee doesn't have to be bitter or chocolatey in flavour. You can drink coffee that tastes like peach or blueberry juice. That coffee is often expensive because we're finally giving people more money for a premium product and not exploiting them.

        • 7-11 coffee is rubbish. I used to drink it for years until I got into diy. I ran out recently, so tried a 711 long black and it was bland and bitter. I then grabed a bag of Daley Street 200g for $5.50 at coles to tide me over that same day, and it blew the 7-11 coffee away.

    Sheet this is expensive

  • WHY 230g?? while most other bean bakers do 250g???

  • No paypal; no sale.
