All i can say is if you like Action JRPGs then this is an absolute must.

    • +3

No game has stuck with me like Nier Automata.

      • +1

        Especially the music right?

        • +2

          <spoiler>
The part when you find the amusement park for the first time is one of my favourite ever moments in a video game
          </spoiler>

          • +1

@qaz182: Or even the part when you're running from the Amusement park to the Robot village.

  • Dang I just spent the same amount for it deliver pre-owned from Eb games. Oh same same.

  • +1

Bought it from Amazon a little while back for $49, and it's still wrapped in plastic…

  • A question for the core fans of the series: does one have to have played Drakengard (2003) or the original Nier (2010) to get the full jist of the storyline?

    • +2

There are tiny hits here and there to the other games if you squint and know you're looking for, but the ultimate answer is - no, this is pretty much a standalone game just set in the same world.

    • +1

I did read this a while ago before buying the PS4 version. The world and lore is the same and some characters or character's names are reused but they're individual storyline.

    • No need to be honest.

It has it's own story development.

    • I played it without playing anything prior and it was fine.

    • Note that the original Nier has been remade

    • +1

      Don't need to play either.

References to the previous games are more Easter egg like but I feel that after playing Nier Replicant after, I really didn't miss out on much

    • If you like Automata you can try Replicant, if you want more after that you can emulate Drakengard 3 on RPCS3 very well these days, (4k 120fps). The movement and combat is quite janky in comparison to Automata and Replicant, Drakengard 1 is like a very rough Dynasty Warriors clone written by a lunatic. I wouldn't worry about playing them '"in order".

  • +1

Didn't look into this at all just bought it hope its good

    • +10

It's great. One to thing to note though is that if you die during the opening (about 45-minutes of playtime), you'll need to restart from the beginning. To save you a hassle, keep it on Easy or Normal and switch the difficulty once you reach the Save point.

      • +2

It's a major turn off actually. I died few times during this opening. Total waste of time.

        • Yeah, I'm a huge sucker for difficult games and I hate that part as well.

Still played hard in my first playthrough though. Took a few hours.

        • You should play Dark Souls

      • Interesting gameplay choice thanks for the tip

      • +1

Easy, don't even waste your time with Normal and maybe die depending on skill level.

Just go Easy, lifes too short to waste time on the terrible design choice of an eccentric game designer.

  • I already have the ps4 version. Should I buy the swtich version too? Is it true that the performance is better than the ps4 version? I don't use handhold a lot just wondering if the extra content is worth it.

    • +4

PS4 runs in 60 fps whilst switch runs in 30 frames. I think you played the best version on PS4 already… Get switch version if you want to play it again in portable mode.

      • +1

Is it worth buying for the ps5?

I fear it’s too beautiful a game to play on switch

        • +4

I think they did a great job porting it to switch, but if you have a PS4/Ps5 and love your smooth graphics, the increased frame rate and res is more enjoyable on those consoles.

  • +1

    great game great music

  • Can anyone comment on weather this is worth having on switch or if it's way better on PC if you have a decent rig?

    • +1

Considered buying it on PC before the Switch port came out. It seemed the PC port was really buggy. So when I heard the Switch port ran great, went for that even with the downgraded graphics compared to my decent PC rig. Don't know if the PC version has been properly patched yet, but there's meant to be a good unofficial patch that fixes a few issues.

      • +3

the PC version even after the last patch still has some bugs, but they are generally all fixed with some community mods. for example the last patch broke AO, and is occasionally visible through geometry as shadowy lines, lodmod fixes it however.

      • Oh i didn't realise the pc version was buggy. Has very high ratings on steam…

    • +1

PC version is the best of all releases, especially with some mods, Special K+HD texture pack, Upscaled videos, LodMod, Wolfs limit break Patch.
Not sure what you mean by decent rig, but maxing all those out is quite heavy, particularly LodMod.

Switch version is capped at 30fps by default, and looks significantly worse even unmodified. It is serviceable though, I was impressed for the hardware.

      • Is the switch hardware even weaker than last gen consoles?
I mean how is that even achievable when ps4 was released in 2013…

        • +2

The Switch is a 6 year old handheld with an 8 year old mobile chipset. It's a miracle it can run PS4 games at all.

          • -1

@Tiges98: Wow what the hell has Nintendo been doing…i thought it was a current gen console. This is weaker than last gen. Unbelievable

      • that's great but I wouldn't call it the best of all releases given that you need a bunch of mods to make it work

        • +1

1 mod, lodmod, which is just drop a 150kb file in the .exe directory for the default configuration. I do agree with you though, I should have qualified that statement. Its never been a particularly beautiful game graphically, but you can give it a good push on PC with some work.

          • @Mael5trom: ah I see. well I'm all for modding and improving the game :')

    • PC port is kind of messed up.

Just look on Reddit and NeoGAF

  • I just played this over the last few weeks when I bought it during the last sale.

Enjoyed it overall but it's not quite a masterpiece for me.

    Combat gameplay 8/10
    Main Quest 9/10
Side quests 4/10 (some interesting plot points in the the side quests but they're really just generic MMO fetch quests which was quite disappointing)

It's a reasonably good game but I probably came in with expectations set way too high from all the "masterpiece" recommendations.

    Still great for this price.

    • +1

‘Nier: Automata has a total of 26 various endings which require at least three playthroughs to complete.’

      • +1

Yes I've played all the way to Ending E (and a few other joke endings) and done most of the important sidequests. I've put 40 hours into the game before being done with it.
The main story is decently entertaining and did a lot of interesting things (which is why the story is a 9/10 for me).

Personally, it's the middling combat and side quests that I feel were a bit of a letdown. I was probably expecting Devil May Cry combat with a great story, but it's more akin to a slightly deeper dynasty warriors with a great story.

No regrets at all, for $34 I had a good time over 40 hours. I think I would've enjoyed it more if I hadn't gone in expecting it to be a 10/10.

An impressive Switch port according to DF:

Mmm seems like maybe Series X might be the go… Thanks

  • For those who pick up the game, Resonant Arc have just stated their story telling analysis podcast of this game. They do a great job.

  • Oos

    • "Only 2 left in stock"

I think they trickle in stock.

  • Is the Yorha edition worth getting over the standard edition? I already have standard PS4 on disc but haven't played it yet

    • +1

Not really, the DLC is some outfits/skins and some extra activity, not worth buying again…

unless you want to support Platinum Games :3
