Refurb HP Zbook 15 G4 Laptop from Pcstoremelbourne: Issues and Work around

HP Zbook stopped working this morning after 4 months; shortly after 3 month warranty expired.

I press the power button; nothing on the screen; no sounds from the computer.
Power adaptor is plugged in. Light on notebook next to where the adaptor plugs in, is turned on.

Notebook was purchased on 8 Dec 2022. (Good experience during sales)

Sms'd store about failure at 9am on 26 April 2022 to see if they have a response.
Realized at this point, no direct number to call the shop (only SMS), no shop address given (there is a PO Box), messaging is available through the website. This could be a small operation in a room in a house.

5:30pm, still no reply.

The main reason I am posting, is to share with others a work around.
I have some tech skills etc. This notebook does not turn on, even with direct power, if the battery fails.
Removing the battery lets me use the computer again. I can take my time getting a replacement battery or stay with using this notebook, tethered to power points.

If your notebook stops turning on, it may be worth getting someone with tech skills to look into battery replacement/removal for your HP ZBook 15 G4.

Side note, I was not pleased the notebook died just outside the 3 months warranty. I've used computers with 1 year warranty for many years. This should've lasted much longer.

On the original post, someone asked the business a question about the battery date, which wasn't answered; my one says 2018 March.

It's a 5 year old laptop, it's not surprising the battery died. That's what you get when you buy a laptop with a 3 month warranty.

Buy a new battery for $60, replace it (no IT skills required, just watch the 30 second video on youtube. You unscrew the base, take out the battery, put in the new one, done) and move on.

    • At a quick check, you have much more knowledge and experience assembling and disassembling notebooks than heaps of people.

This information wasn't here to help you; it is here to help some others.

The despair some will feel when the notebook fails to start etc.

The knowledge that, this computer will not turn on, EVEN THOUGH the power adaptor is plugged in, IF the battery is dead.
(I've used a bunch of notebooks and they all kept running, even with a dead battery)

It also lets people know some more information about the business.

It looks like, refurbishment might not include a new battery.
Computers from them might have a failure after 3 months, if the business hasn't specified that refurbishments include a recently manufactured battery.

This post just contained information like how some OzBargainers share about their experiences, which can help other people on OzBargain.

No, the business hasn't responded to me yet, at all, about the notebook failing to work.

  • Hi OP,

Sorry to hear you're having issue with your unit.

I'm not with this store, however I've dealt with enough HP laptops to know a few troubleshooting steps that may or may not work.

Can you please try unplugging the AC adapter, make sure unit is powered off (with no LEDs anywhere on, on the unit).

At the same time, press and hold down the Windows + C keys, then press the power button once? Keep holding down the Windows + C keys for about 15 seconds after.

Remove your fingers from the Windows + C keys and plug the AC adapter in and try power on the unit. Do you see any lights on the keyboard flash?

If this doesn't work, repeat the above but swap the C key for the V key. If V does not work, try with the F5 key.

If none of these steps work, it is likely there's a hardware issue (which you've already diagnosed)
