PS5 How Do You Store All Your Games?

Hey everyone
I’m currently using a 4TB 2.5” Portable External Hard Drive on my PS5 and it’s started to run slow. Almost every time I boot up my PS5 I have to wait for the external hard drive to load all my games which is a lot. I have a lot of PS4 and Indie titles and the hard drive has approx 300gb left on it.

So my question is to everyone - How do you store your games when your not playing them?

Do you use a external hard drive or do you just delete them and leave them in your Library ready to download the next time you wanna play one?

I’m thinking of upgrading my external hard drive to a faster self powered 3.5” 8TB one or maybe just a portable 2.5” SSD 2TB one and keep some games on there and the rest in the Library or even buy a PS5 Internal SSD upgrade when they come down in price.

Third option would be to just leave all games I’m not playing in the Library ready to be installed so I can save money on buying a external hard drive that I will slowly fill up again seeing the PS5 can take only one external at a time.

Would love to hear how everyone goes about this so I can weigh up my options on what to do

Thanks in advance!

I just delete games I have finished or no longer playing and hasn't been an issue with the in-built storage. More than sufficient.

As a physical disc collector, pretty easy to reinstall whatever game I want and download smaller patch if required.

    • Yer I use to buy games physically but I’ve moved to digital now so I was looking for advice

Seems odd if you're price sensitive, when discs are significantly cheaper, but really your options are larger HDDs (which only play PS4 games and store but-not-play PS5 games) or internal M.2 SSDs (which do both).

I just prefer digital now that’s all

          • @Twisty: Digital also just stays in your library and can be downloaded anytime, so same as Hybroid said, delete after done.

      • but I’ve moved to digital now so I was looking for advice

isn't it expensive as you can't buy used game discs ?

        • I just buy games I want and sometimes really cheap ones for fun after too many drinks

2TB internal SSD, paid once and just forget about it. I guess I only have games I actually play installed or soon to be played.

Also I have the disc version of the console.

  • Don't you need one of them nvme internal drives for PS5 games?

  • Does anyone just use the Library (Cloud) to store their purchased digital games when they are not playing them and you have too many to put on PS5 Internal?

I really don't know how it works, PS interface is little confusing the way it mixes in all your digital games, your Games with Gold games, and the PS+ games. My PS+ expired anyway.

      • Damn right Xbox does this better

  • How many are you playing at once?

XSX owner here, and I just cull off old games when not needed

    • I’m playing about 3 so I keep them on my PS5 internal

The rest of the games I’m not playing are stored on external hard drive so when I wanna play them I just copy them to internal but since the external is getting full I was thinking of just deleting them and keeping them in the cloud library to download again when ready.

Is this option safe? If the game does get removed from the PS Shop I can always download it again correct

      • Yes, digital purchases are tied to your PS account so you can re-download any games you have licenses for anytime.

        • Thanks

  • I have the disc version and added an internal 2 tb ssd. I haven't had an issue till now. I hope the 4 tb will be affordable soon and I can upgrade to 4 tb.

  • So what I’m really leaning towards now is the following

Either getting a internal add on SSD for the PS5 or a portable external SSD just to store games on that will be big downloads

And the rest of my games deleting and keeping in the library to download when I wanna play them. This was I won’t be filling up hard drives with games I’m not playing or haven’t played in awhile

    Thoughts on this?

    • You should get the internal drive if you use your PS5 a lot. Also if you can get gigabit NBN then that's worth it too, games will download 20 times faster compared to the 50Mbps internet a lot of people have. And they really will download full speed, at least they did on my PS4 and XSX at my old house.

    • Get the internal SSD (with headsink) - either 1 or 2tb. Maybe 2tb if you want to futureproof.

1/2tb SSDs have been getting price reductions a fair bit lately over last couple of weeks.

Installation is easy and performance is seamless when playing games from either your internal PS5 storage or SSD.

      Don't bother with externals now.

      • Yer sounds good like others have mentioned too.

Get the internal and leave the other games uninstalled In library

    • Get an internal SSD, largest you can afford (that's spec'd for a PS5, preferably with heatsink) and don't look back. Trust me, you won't ever regret the up front $$

      • Yer I’m convinced now. That’s what I’m gonna do and then all the other games I’ll leave uninstalled in library ready to install when needed

        • Get at least 2TB, you can get them around $200-300 I think. They're getting pre' cheap. Then you'll have 870GB+2TB so you can install lots of your games at leisure.

  • Get an internal nvm drive, I got a 1tb Sabrent for $130ish it falls under the min specs but works fine lol

    • Yer sounds good I’ll get a internal upgrade then leave the other games uninstalled in library

  • Unless you regular play multiple MP games, I never understood that need for anything more than the internal drive. Delete when no longer playing, re-install later if you want to play again (hahaha yeah right says the backlog).

Completely different if you have limited internet access.

  • I've got the PS5 Digital version having gone fully digital for the entire life of my PS4. Like you, I just prefer the digital experience.

I have added a 2TB SSD for PS5 games (mostly PS+ Essential and Extras). I also have my 4TB USB external added from my PS4 for all those games.

I like to dip in and out of lots of games, so it's great to have 50%(??) of my library available at all times.

    • Yer I have all my games currently installed and ny external 4TB is slowing down now and causing the ps5 on boot up to take ages to read it

  • I added a 2TB M.2 for PS5 games & got a good deal on a Samsung 8TB (yes, overkill for most) 870 QVO on ebay which I use with a USB 3.0 enclosure for PS4 games. PS4 game loading times are limited by decompression so a PS4 game will load just as fast from a portable/SATA SSD as it does from the internal SSD & I don't have to wait for it to load when I boot it up.

    Scorptec have a 2TB Kingston M.2 for $249 atm.

I’d like to thank everyone for their contributions to this post it has been a lot of help

I’ve decided like many of you suggested to go down the path of upgrading the internal hard drive and then just leaving all the other games I’m not playing uninstalled in the cloud library

Now just to wait for a cracking deal on a 2TB internal upgrade for my PS5

    Thanks to everyone for this!
