What purchases have you made that have unexpectedly increased in value?
For example, for me:
- Chromecast audio
- Logitech
G15G510 keyboard
What purchases have you made that have unexpectedly increased in value?
For example, for me:
@ruddiger7: only lying to urself
@MrTillets: you're living a lie bro
A beautiful hand woven basket from a nurringerri women's group for $30 ten years ago. Saw a similar one in Alice Springs for $350 last month. It's really solid, and we've been using it for keeping TV remotes, batteries, etc..
….just like the indiginous peoples did back in the day!
Why the neg? It was quite expensive at the time we bought it, but we thought it was a fair price for the makers.
buying goats, always increasing in value
yeah - when you buy something that's the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) - it should increase in value
I read that as "buying boats". I thought you must be joking lol. Goats over boats any day.
Star Wars Books. I've got a number of highly sought after EU (now Legends) first edition books that are in hard cover. One in particular can fetch hundreds of dollars in good condition, I even saw a listing for that book asking $1000 once. The other thing that has gone up in value that I completely didn't expect was the BNIB Cara Dune Black Series figure I bought before LucasFilm fired Gina Carano.
Goddamnit, I gave all of my sw eu hardcover books away to a second hand book store about a decade ago :(
2010 Toyota Camry
Seriously, you sold it for more than new price or just sold a second hand one for a profit?
My Gerald Genta mickey mouse watch. Wasn't meant to sell it but that guy on WatchUseek kept asking me to sell it to him for a few years, I could have sold it for more thru auction houses or if I listed it for sale privately but couldn't be bothered with shipping and all the hassle.
Stonks
Anything in particular? Generally, stonks are purchased with an expectation of an increase or grow in value long term.
You didn't expect them to go up in value?
Have a few unopened bottles of Taketsuru 21
A couple of board games I bought from garage sales over 20 years ago for $5 are selling into the hundreds now (Hero Quest)
A bottle of Hibiki 21 year whisky I bought in Japan for $300 is now worth between $1500 to $2000
Still have a pile of old lego, pogs, magic the gathering, basketball cards and some other things being an 80's/90's kid that I am told are worth money now.
A lot of the money that was being thrown around for these things has washed away since we have come out of COVID and interest rates heading north.
3ds
I've noticed how crazy in price those things have jumped recently. Managed to buy a new 3ds xl for $80. Now way would I be paying over $300+ for one.
Yeah it surprised me. I guess we won't get anything like it again. Switch isn't a great portable console, no successor to PSP/Vita.
I had a collection of them, and have sold down to just 2 as they were just sitting on display, in box, on my bokshelf.
Managed to buy a new 3ds xl for $80
Not from Amazon by any chance? :)
2DS XL as well
My vintage 1980's style pacman game is apparently worth about $200? Does that count?
Retro gaming.
Pumpkins. They've been going up the whole month of October and I got a feeling they're going to peak right around January. Then bang! That's when I'll cash in.
Bought a 2020 Corolla brand new and sold it 2 years later with for $5k more than I bought it for. Crazy times.
Also Nintendo Switch. Sold that for $150 more than I bought it for. Opportunisticly sold it when I realised their 2nd hand prices during COVID.
Greek yoghurt
I see you're a man of culture…
Vectrex. Birthday present now worth over $1000, plus several games worth over $100 each.
I also have a rare SX-64 portable (lol) version of the Commodore 64. Got it at a flea market for $5 and worth over $1000 now.
I used to have an original Atari and C64. My Dad ended up throwing them out. I still feel sick thinking about it.
That's tragic. I always grab them from kerb collections. They'll always be worth something.
Got my atari2600 with 15 odd games, joysticks for 5 bucks at a garage sale. Didnt have any cash on me, was searching under thevseats to scrounge it up
Chromecast Audio is worth money? I have 3 set up around the house, and 2 more boxed that I bought in case one of the ones in use carked it.
I have some records that shot up in value, but it's kind of a hard thing - you have to sell at the right time or the price plummets.
they are. its not really worth it to buy tho. so many other options in the same price range that its selling for
GP watch - up around $500.
Classic Reebok sneakers - got them for $5 now worth $100.
I bought a Toyota 86, 3 years and 50k KM later I sold it for $4k profit. That was unexpected.
my house
Is that unexpected?
I bought a pack of (profanity) matches for 50c. They're selling on ebay for $13 plus shipping now. That's a 2600% return. Edit - that's Dick (as in Dick Smith) Head matches.
Petrol.
RAC shares
Patrick Stump "Soul Punk" vinyl and Fall Out Boy "Immortals" vinyl. Paid around $25 each, now worth $200 each on eBay.
Bough a second family car Aug 2020 for 8k.
I didn't need the car anymore, 1 serves us well. So I sold it last week for $10,400.
Rolexes…i'm a bit of a fanatic. My collection so far
batgirl
hulk
pepsi
SS sky dweller blue dial
day date rose gold green dial
explorer polar
Paid retail for all…all worth more. Never bought them as investments though I wear each of them weekly as I cycle through them day to day. Won't sell either as each has some kind of sentimental value
pics
Pics please
You must have a good relo with your AD :')
I did not expect graphics cards I bought to go up, some simply held their value or went up slightly, the low profile versions, just because they were rare. Meanwhile others more than tripled in price during the shortages.
My car also went up, but that was half expected, and half not. Could have gone either way. Other models went up in price considerably more than mine.
Bought a GT1030 before the pandemic for $119 new. I can't even find it for under $200 now
STILL!?
Yikes.
Most the cars I have owned.
Bought my first FTO for $800, flipped for $3600. Second one I bought for 6000, flipped for 7800. Currently have a VR4 I paid 5000 for, insured for 22000. Imports are crazy.
Most parts too I have kept and only sold recently as they are 2-3x value now.
Heaps of old 90s Japanese toys/collectables i've kept since being a kid and aquired as an adult. Beyblades BNIB, Crush Gears etc.
Currently have a VR4
Ooh we talking the 89-91 version, or the 98-02 version?
8th gen, 96-2001
Nice, I nearly imported one when they were first added to SEVS in like 2003, but got put off. Would've had one of the first in the country
Heard bad things about the turbos not lasting though? From mates who got them later on
@spackbace: Maybe if you throw an MBT without a tune and crank the boost - as many people do.
My friend used to have a knock-off beyblade with a really heavy steel core and the fins were plastic but felt really hard and rigid. This thing wrecked any official plastic beyblade it hit, like, those high-end $50 ones just chipped and shattered as soon as they touched this bad boy. I guess the warning signs were there because when it landed on the official plastic arena it would leave dent in it lol
I prefer them sealed in boxes :P I remember the heavy discs, same with the metal tip
I have a flashcart for my old Nintendo DS which I bought for $6 back in the day, they are now worth $25 on ebay. I believe the latest firmware allows them to hold up to 1 or 2TB in games which means you can essentially have the entire notable NDS library on one card. Also, they've mass-produced 2000mah batteries which means that you can play your DS for 2 days straight without needing a recharge.
Oakley XMetal collection, as the modern range is garbage
bought a skateboard in 2000.
toymachine deck, gullwing trucks, point blank wheels.
paid $50 for the deck at surfdiveski melb.
trucks I got off another skateboard.
wheels were $40.
was my daily rider for years.
just sold it last week for $1200.
Original Star Wars figures from the early 80’s. I bought (my parents) them cause they were fun toys that I liked to collect. Ended up selling them all a few years ago for $4,000
I am certain they be worth more than $10k now
That’s a pretty wild assumption without seeing them lol.
Well done for cashing in a nice chunk of money.
Amiibos - I had a couple Yoshi yarn amiibos purchased when the game was out, purely because they looked cute. They were on display all the time. Last year when moving house, I wanted to downsize so looked online to get an idea of how much discount I should sell it for, I was going to sell each for $10 but thought it might be too high considering how old they are. And boy was I wrong, they could easily fetch $40+ now. Not that crazy but I was definitely not expecting a mass produced item to be inflating like that.
I ended up keeping them though as I still think they are cute…
Heritage number plates
Yep. My 6 digits are worth at least 8 times what i paid for them in 2015.
Almost anything Sony
Audio gear - only up
PS Vita TV - $25 and hated by Ozb now ~$300
PSX Classic - $30 and hated by Ozb now ~$250
PS4 Pro White - $390 sold for $700
Why would PS4 go up in value ?
Z32 300zx
FC3S RX7
Both now worth more than 4 times what i paid.
I had a heavily modified (300rwkw) midnight purple R34 GTT Skyline. Think I sold it for like $24k about 8 years ago. Nowadays seems to be worth 2-3 times that amount.
Yeah I had a tidy R34 GTT Coupe Manual in Red with 110,000kms 10 years ago. Sold it for $11,000.
i have a shit ton of items that have gone up in price, not by a little but i mean more than 3 times the original RRP and then a lot more in some case.
one that surprised me was the value of my car i purchased in 2018. i have been offered on a few occasions the price that i purchased for when new. still in factory form with no mods too which is a surprise
A BMW Z3 - bought for 6k precovid, fixed a few things up probably spent 2k on it and sold it at the covid peak for 15k.
Ironically— I bought a 100 trillion dollar Zimbabwe note for about $6 AUD as a symbol of inflation. I'm pretty sure it's worth $300+ now.
I have one too. Bought for about $10 as a laugh, as I collect hyper inflationary currency. Kicking myself I didn't buy more.
Bought a VW for $5000 a few years back, fast forward a few years and it’s now worth $12000. Done around 30000km on it during the time and made $30000 with food delivery also.
Still only got 110k on it. Another 2 more years and I have money to buy a Tesla
Windows laptop & Surface pro when they were 50% off.
Bought a bottle of Japanese whisky for $100 in 2015. Sold at auction for net $400. Nice.
To name ones that come to mind,
A few limited edition Yamazaki 18s for $500 each whilst in Japan in 2017.
Impulse ozbargain purchase of a pokemon 2ds xl $79 back in 2019.
The dragon CNY lego set.
Fuel ?
I bought a rust bucket 1990 60 series Landcruiser Sahara in 2018 for 12k when they were starting to gain more popularity, put a 5000kms on it and tried to sell it in 2019 for what I bought it for and was told I was dreaming by FB experts. I let the rego expire for a couple of years, listed it for sale again in Nov 2021, unregistered, for 16k and sold it in one day. Should have asked for more but was happy with the quick sale.
Piece of paper with a picture of a Pokemon on it.
My Rocket Appartamento Espresso machine is worth more second hand than I paid for it around 2019.
The latest HP Omen gaming laptop deal i got here last month for $3000. Now retailing for $4200.
Purchased a 'cheap' guitar, a Cole Clark Fat Lady 1 (FL1) about 15 years ago, one that I could take to the beach, maybe throw around, not care too much if it got scratched. All that happened and the guitar is pretty well worn. Considered selling it recently so looked up what they are worth, now go for about $2K+, I wish I kept it in better condition!
I've still got my Aarti, Commodore 64, Megadrive, NES, and some old custom console that plays Tanks.
Not sure how much they are all worth today … but I would be holding onto them for a few more decades.
A C64 with disk drive, joystick and games in good condition is about $400. Megadrive and NES are about $150 each.
Hold onto them long enough for the people who played with the consoles when they were young to reach peak earning age (50 to 60). Eventually (in a few decades time), the market for a C64 for example will decay. How many 20 year olds today want a C64?
Yeah planning to keep them for at least another 20 years.
Bought a house in a semi-rural area April 2020 at the start of the COVID panic for $440k thinking I was an idiot as it was all about to crash, sold it 14 months later for $685k, thanks COVID.
House prices are crazy!
I don't understand it.
Australia has PLENTY of land, but prices are like we are in Hong Kong/or Singapore with limited space.
Australia has PLENTY of land
But no one wants to live away from the coast.
I think we need faster/better rail network.
If we have a fast bullet train link between Melbourne - Canberra - Sydney - Gold Coast - Brisbane, then we can have lots of towns and cities in between those major stops.
@congo: There isn't enough population in those cities or even the whole of Australia that will regularly travel and pay tickets for those trains in order support the on-going maintenance and operation of a high speed rail. It would need to be partly/fully funded by the Government and they will probably raise taxes to cover it. And then everyone will complain about paying higher taxes.
So in short, it will never happen.
@illusion99: Then those with city jobs are stuck paying insane rents, or insane mortgages.
@congo: Correct. That is the current situation
I once bought a dress on sale, wore it once and placed it on eBay auction for a low price, it got bid to double what I paid for it!
Bought a high-end umbrella from the US when the Australian dollar was at parity, it's worth a (profanity) Motaz now !!! lol
What high end investment umbrella did you get?
she did, champ
