WISE Travel Card - Who Pays The ATM Owner Operators Fee?

Couldn't find an answer to this on their website. When using the WISE card to withdraw cash from overseas ATMs, who pays the ATM owner operators fee? Anybody have experience?

I am trying to find a viable alternative to the ING card which looses this valuable benefit from August. For example in Chile, the ATM owner operators fee is about AUD$15 per withdrawal and the withdrawal limit is only about AUD$385. If the WISE card does not avoid this fee, the card does nothing for me.

  • When using the WISE card to withdraw cash from overseas ATMs, who pays the ATM owner operators fee?

    You do

Wise also has fees after exceeding 2 free withdrawals per month PLUS a % fee after withdrawing $350 per month

If the WISE card does not avoid this fee, the card does nothing for me.

If a large % of ING card holders are racking up big ATM operator fees - which is evidently true - your business does nothing for them

You are better off holding hard USD and then exchanging to the local currency at a forex store

  • I just got an email about fees changing for ATMs, in Australia I think, and for transfers to certain countries. Not that I ever use ATMs with the Wise card, I just spend it with Apple Pay because why not, why bother transferring or withdrawing it at all. I don't get that much from my affiliate sites that I can't spend it all over a year, sadly.

  • You do. If no rebate is specified, then you pay.

  • What about using Bitcoin?

Nah I kid just use ING while it works

  • +1

You can try Citibank plus. This wiki has useful tips for lots of countries (scroll to bottom).

    • Citi is decent but ING has been better(for me anyway). Gonna be sad to see it go!

    • Great tip, thank you!

  • I found this in an article on their website

“ Keep in mind that these are fees Wise charges on your card. Some ATMs may charge additional fees over these. We have no way of predicting those charges, but they’re usually visible on the ATM before you agree to the withdrawal.”

  • In philippines, I used Wise card. Different ATMs have their own charges. And , you have to accept these charges before you can withdraw money from ATM.

  • "If the WISE card does not avoid this fee, the card does nothing for me"

Yes this is the conclusion I've come to.
Why would I transfer/park my money with WISE and then use their debit card if I have to pay local ATM fees anyway (and probably WISE fees on top of that since they have very low 'free' allowances per month.)
    No deal!
