IKEA IDANÄS Bed Frame Question About Slats

Looking to purchase the IDANÄS upholstered queen bed with storage but wanted to replace the existing slats with LÖNSET slats instead since they have much better reviews.

I noticed that when looking at the upholstered Idanas frame, you can't select different slats like you can on the wooden version so I asked IKEA support and they said:

Theoretically if you set the midbeam and metal side pieces the slats sit on on the lowest setting but the framing for the LONSET is quite deep and there is the potential that the slats would sit above the bedframe and the mattress would no long sit within the frame just on top which measn the mattress would be prone to move

Wanted to see if anyone has done this? Seems odd that you are just stuck with the basic slats that people complain about and would probably be a deal breaker for me.

What's wrong with the idanas slats? Are you slat shaming?

I love all slats. Just based on the experience people have had I prefer this particular slat over the other.

Why would you get an upholstered bed frame anyway? It will just fill up with dust, dust mites, and bacteria over time. I'd much prefer a wooden or metal bed frame. Wooden bed frame would look better too, in my opinion.

    • Very much agree with this. Some upholstered look quite nice and can be affordable, but the extra cleaning and dust would stop me from getting one. I think they’d stain too, so wouldn’t last long.

If your bed frame is going to fill up with dust mites then it stands to reason that your bed will too so you've lost the battle there

Not sure what you guys are doing with your bed frames but upholstered are fine and don't get dirty

Your bed has washable sheets and doona covers that you (hopefully) wash weekly/fortnightly. The mattress is under all of this so, yes, while susceptible to dust/dust mites/bacteria, it’s not as easy for it to get in as with upholstered bed frames.

        • Your mattress will generally full up with dust mites, sweat, bacteria, etc. over time. But you place clean mattress protectors and sheets over the mattress, so it doesn't really cause an issue, unless it's severely loaded with mites. You can also vacuum the top of the mattress if you need.

I have a very thick memory foam and gel topper over my mattress, and I vacuum the top of the gel cover every now and then. So I don't think much junk is getting into the mattress.

I also leave the bed uncovered during the day to air/dry out, so that there is not a warm, moist environment for dust mites and other critters to proliferate.

          • @ForkSnorter: I vacuum mine often too as I do have a dust mite allergy. I also take off all the covers and leave it in the sun monthly. All of these things help loads.

      • Fair point but I have a sheet and mattress protector on my mattress. Dust mites feed on skin so there would be very little skin cells in my mattress as it doesn’t go through. The rest gets washed and dried in the sun.

I have a young child, used to have a dog, we live near and go to the beach, dust and dirt comes from many potential sources. Even in a clean house it will be there. Extra upholstery in the bedroom not covered by something washable is one less thing I need to deal with. I’ve always wondered how upholstered head boards go with people that gets stains from their hair/skin/sweat on their pillow cases, I have fair skin and hair so never an issue for me, hubby and child are darker and I see it a little with them.

  • Recently purchased this frame about a month ago, very happy with it as it is very sturdy and comfortable. Personally, we don’t have an issue with the slats that it comes with, and will not be looking to change them out. I can understand the issue, our mattress fits the frame perfectly, but if elevated it would be sitting on the upholstered edges and would move. I guess it’s a personal preference but it may be annoying.

  • Mattress length: 202 cm
    Mattress width: 152 cm

Worth noting that traditional Queen size is 203x153cm

    • This would explain why our mattress fits quite snugly. It’s actually pretty good (with our mattress anyway), because the sheet doesn’t loosen and things don’t get lost down the sides

    • Yeah I did notice this and thought it was a bit weird

      • All/most of Ikea's bedding is non-standard. Ikea quilts require Ikea quilt covers due to the sizing being slightly off.

I think it's their way to keep you to their products

        • Fantastic. So you can't even rely on standard measurements like "Queen" anymore.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: For example:

What size is a king size quilt? On average, a king-size quilt measures 245 cm by 210 cm.

Ikea offers quilt covers 240x220cm, so it never feels 'right', having a standard King quilt in an Ikea cover

          • @coffeeinmyveins: I have an Ikea queen bed frame, mattress and quilts and haven't had any issue with normal queen sheets or quilt covers not fitting.
