Did a quick search for pricing on Apple TV 4K models that have Ethernet.
This seems to be the lowest price I can find.
Note its the previous model, yet may be worth it if your after Ethernet and not wanting to spend $210+

Wow half the weight. Did they take the power brick out or something?
Helium infused model.
Makes sense. Thanks!
@muncan: Actually not certain. Googled for half a minute, appears it mostly is tied up in its 20% size reduction maybe. Though I agree, that doesn't seem to explain it all.
Seems the new version is fanless.
That's really not very fair. I don't mind it at all, and Chooka that lives over my back fence, he doesn't mind it either. So there surely must be others.
@seamonkey: There's a website somewhere devoted to fans only.
@seamonkey: Not minding something doesn't exactly make you a fan. Would you and Chooka be prepared to subscribe?
Doesnt include Thread and Matter support?
This one does, it’s the 32gb third gen that doesn’t.
What does that mean I'm not getting if I buy a 3rd gen?
There is no 32gb 3rd gen, only 64gb as new base model and it doesn't.
@ozdesi: Thanks for the correction!
HomeKit only, no thread or matter in this older generation. Doesn’t have the radio chip.
Video killed the radio star
I disagree. All 2nd generation 4K models indeed have the Thread radio. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT200008
And Matter support is available to all Apple Home Hub devices (ATVs and HomePods) since iOS 16.1.
How much of an upgrade is this from a Google Chromecast 4K, for a non-owner of an iPhone?
I run an Emby Server (would need to buy the app again) , and am a pretty heavy user of Kodi.
I am a massive apple hater, but this is much better than chromecast. Apps are designed better also and chromecast stuff is clunky. Not sure what the point is of having larger storage models, the apps aren't big. All they're useful for is streaming and not really useful for anything else.
Larger storage models are I'm guessing for people that use gaming. Need to download games to the device.
I can't understand why you'd play games on these things…there's so many better options. Ps5, xbox, even PC!
@Lets Make Sandwiches: Retro gaming on your TV?
@BuyOrNot: Yes but they make dedicated boxes for those things.
@Lets Make Sandwiches: More like dedicated 🤑
@Lets Make Sandwiches: There's a huge market for casual/indie games. If you're not going to be playing anything that requires the power, this is more than sufficient. Would you buy a PS5 to play Vampire Survivors or World of Goo?
It should also be able to run steam link or PS5 remote apps so there's also that option.
@ihfree: Fair enough I'll take your word on it for the indie demand - I see them come up on ps plus every month but haven't really played them.
The controller issue though - these games would be hard to play with a remote.
@Lets Make Sandwiches: Lol, you'd pair a controller for anything but the most casual of games
@ihfree: There's another expense, and the technical know how. Everybody on OZB expects people to understand what a Nvidia is and what plex and how to setup linux blah blah blah, but those aren't mainstream things.
You should disclose the additional investment and hassle with setting up controllers when suggesting it as an alternative.
@Lets Make Sandwiches: Gaming or even local streaming, while possible, is probably still reasonably niche.
A controller isn't included - so buying one likely falls into the common sense bucket. Pairing a Bluetooth device isn't exactly the same as setting up Linux/Plex/*arr.
Various common controllers are also supported with Apple help pages guiding users through the setup process.
Ozbargain's audience are reasonably tech literate so conversation is generally around that level. The main problem is with members who don't seem to understand that people other than themselves with different skills/requirements/income exist.
Thanks for the reply. The main loss not having an iPhone is the inability to cast from your phone? Come to think of it, I do often browse YouTube on my phone and send them to the TV to view.
You can still do that
@theguyrules: With an Android phone?
@Charlie Dont Surf: Yeah the same button you use to "cast" to a chromecast in the YouTube app on your phone will show YouTube apps running on devices such as a smart TV or an Apple TV and let you choose something to play there and control it etc.
You can just browse on the Apple TV YT app instead.. instead of having to cast.
sideloading apps? I'm told it's difficult plus not much choice either.
@ $155 for the 2nd gen ATV if the chromecast with Google Tv 4K is full price at $99. A lot more power and space to properly buffer.
I have LG C2 and I always run this Apple TV over its WebOS, just way better. Also don't need newest one this has all the power you need
If you use Kodi get an Nvidia Shield Pro. AppleTV doesn’t natively support Kodi, it has to be sideloaded every 7 days.
It's worth paying more for the 3rd generation. 30-40% more powerful chipset + 4 times the storage.

In addition, Fanless + USB-C charging for the remote. I'm going to try out the Apple TV coming from a Chromecast. Reasons detailed in my deal post for the 128gb 3rd gen.
We have both at home (sign - wife likes android). I prefer the Apple interface for sure, it's just smoother and more responsive
100% agree if someone needs it. But some people may prefer Ethernet over the extra power. If it just for streaming content. Keeping to the minimal budget pricing.
I’ve got this gen, I’m struggling to think why I’d need more power when I use them as a streaming device. Gaming sure. I couldn’t have told you if it had a fan either.
Tempted to buy one to just use as a Thread Border Router & HomeKit/Matter hub with ethernet.
can you do a ELI5 for simple folk like me?
Thread is a newer, wireless standard for smart home devices. It operates on 2.4 GHz, but it's its own network, and is a lot like ZigBee. This Apple TV, SOME* of the next generation, and all HomePod Minis have Thread radios in them, and can act as a Thread Border Router, which is basically a device that BRIDGES this Thread network with your IP network. In the case of this Apple TV, that bridging can occur over WiFi, or ethernet with ethernet obviously enabling faster response times.
(*The latest Apple TV only includes the Thread radio on the higher-end model, so if you don't need the increased CPU abilities of the new Apple TV, and are only looking for a Thread router, this will do fine.)
If you use HomeKit, an Apple TV can also act as a "HomeHub", the brain of a HomeKit setup. Again, having that on the network via ethernet should enable faster response times.

100% my experience. It’s much more responsive on Ethernet for my collection of HA devices and software talking to this thing.
Interesting. From what I am reading, it sets up a 'mesh' like signal for wifi devices to connect to, is that correct?
If so, why not get a Mesh device compatible with the router? Just asking out of curiosity.
The Thread mesh is NOT WiFi. It's a completely different type of wireless network that requires a device, like this Apple TV, that can act as a Thread Border Router, to bridge it to the IP network (to allow normal phones and devices to interact with the devices on the Thread network)
How does this compare to Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K Media Player $218
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762740
$63
Prices have started to come down again after the Covid peak and might be able to get sub $200 soon
It depends what you’re trying to do.
If you’re streaming the legal way, ATV wins.
The shield is only good if you’re side-loading apps.
Shield has some king of AI upscaling, its makes low res video more sharper, its noticeable on a 4K tv.
Parents have a non-smart TV and a fetch box that sucks (media USB playback is awful). Can Apple TV provide support for media content? I know it doesn't have a USB input, do I need to setup a media server and it can read off that? What do most people use it for?
Yes you need a media server:
Plex
Emby
Infuse
Jellyfin
MrMC
Should work.
I however use a 2012 headless Mac mini with attached 4TB external thunderbolt drive that has my iTunes library amd steam via home sharing to all my apple devices.
appreciate the reply, ty
I use Infuse, which just point to an SMB share, and it builds/caches its library… no need for specialised software on the media server side.
No ads too.
On a sumsung tv r bombarded with ads and it tracks u too..which is hard to turn off
The google tv on tcl is so bad and slow thinking buying this for it
It's not a bad option, though, you'd also likely see a significant improvement buying a standalone Chromecast.
A Chromecast is just as good at least than half the price. It's also much smaller so easier to hide.
The Apple TV works better with the AirPods too.
The google tv on tcl is so bad and slow thinking buying this for it
Mine is fine. Which model TV do you have?
Problem will always be software upgrades demand better hardware, but our TVs live in the past. Time will slow us all.
No stock nearby in Adelaide unless I wanted to travel 2000km to the NT, price matched at Good Guys no problem
Comes with the 'new' Siri Remote. They retail for $90 alone.
Wow, more than twice the price of a Chromecast ultra, even on sale.
That's not news when it comes to Apple. Chromecast is good value for money - just not as 'nice' to use.
so? Google Chromecast Ultra is twice the price of RPi.
if one got the latest tv that has Apple+ Netflix etc.
would any of you know, what’s the reason or benefit to still get an Apple TV?
smoother overall experience. The OS on most new smart TVs is clunky, this and the Chromecast makes it a much better experience to stream through the apps
that’s it, Smoother?
No quality improvement on audio or visual? Better Quality audio output to send to AV receiver etc?
The Netflix app on my Sony A80K sometimes loses audio-synch i.e. the audio becomes out-of-synch with the video, and needs to be manually restarted which is a hassle. And this week the YouTube app has stopped displaying the category labels (e.g. Recommended and Recently Uploaded), and manually restarting the app doesn't help.
No such issues with the apps on Apple TV.
got one of the older gens, non-4k, tempted to upgrade but don't really watch that much 4k to justify it - can anyone convince me?
It's the Ozbargain way. Buy now, think later.
In all seriousness, don't upgrade until there's a good reason to
Haha yep my sentiments exactly!
Thanks OP, missed out on the Gen 3 128Gb sale from another post around the same time. Honestly though, I won't be gaming on the Apple TV so won't need the extra power the newer A series chip has. Only feature I was genuinely interested in with the latest gen was Karaoke but that was going to then send me down a path of spending more money to buy Mics etc soooo I'm going to be happy with this model and just call it a day.
Have a look at the Apple TV from the good guys on eBay - should be the next cheapest if you can pick up.
Already ordered from JB but had a quick look and no stock near me for TGG anyway. Thanks though.
where do they have stock?
Just got a cancellation email for my order from JB :/
Mines been stuck in ready for processing by auspost since mon :/
Here is the comparison chart ..
