Suggestions about what? You haven't actually asked anything. Unless you are asking for peoples opinions on this vehicle and MG in general?

You're looking at the base model of a Chinese made car, don't expect much. I'm pretty sure these are actually just SAIC cars that are rebranded as MG because I saw "SAIC" all over it when I visited the Parra dealership a while ago so ask yourself, would you drive the same car if it said SAIC instead of MG? Remove any heritage from your mind that the brand MG may have provided.

https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/mg-zs-excite has a few interesting points about this vehicle.

    • Honestly most small SUVs look the same to me. I spotted what I thought was one in a car park (wanted to check the spoiler for bike rack purposes). Got right up to the thing and… it was a Nissan.

Overall for 2022, MG placed seventh, moving 49,582 units and capturing 4.9 per cent of the Australian market

6 bad reviews on product review, half of them don't even own the car. lol

      • Good point.

The cars are cheap. So is maccas. Doesn't mean it's good.

I prefer it in the red colour

    • Red is indeed the superior colour :p

      • Such a limited colour range too. I recall new cars used to have heaps of colours to choose from & now it's a piddly handful.

It will fail to live up to the ‘Excite’ part implied by its name

    • Noun
      exite (plural exites)

An additional lobe on the outer side of the protopodite of a crustacean limb.

MG's marketing peeps didn't think it through

    • I'm surprised at the acceleration provided by the 1.5litre engine to be honest. lol

Suggestions for how you can get a cheap Chinese car for even cheaper? How much do you think they're making from a $24k car exactly?

    • Wasn't Great Wall caught putting asbestos in the doors of their utes a while ago? You'd be surprised how many corners can be cut.

      • You'd be surprised labor cost, property cost and working conditions between China and Australia/Japan

      • IIRC this is NOT even close to the reality - as why would you put asbestos into a vehicle's door?

Literally off the top of my head but I believe they had used asbestos in part of the engine shielding or perhaps in a gasket - either way was illegal and they had to recall them and change for safer material.

IIRC this is NOT even close to the reality

"not even close to reality". Oh ok it's just the engine and exhaust gaskets (from googling). It's in the same ballpark. Not even close to reality would be "they haven't put any asbestos in the vehicle at all".

          • as why would you put asbestos into a vehicle's door?

Why would you put it in any part of a vehicle?

either way was illegal and they had to recall them and change for safer material.

Where did you read that they recalled them? A quick google said they just needed to replace them if the part was being replaced in a regular service and didn't have to issue a recall.

If you can shell for the EV version do that (which i understand is a BIG jump, so all good if not)- and definitely check owner's forums ahead of time. And to be honest, hire one for a couple of days and see how you feel. The ZS EV is a good drive based on my test, but a friend who has driven both the ICE and EV versions said that the ICE version is pretty bad, mostly down to transmission but agrees the EV is a great drive (he ordered an MG4). Also take the 4 weeks with a grain of salt- 4 weeks to Port, then ????- though a white excite might just be sitting in the back somewhere.

Plenty of people are happily driving ICE MGs though, so YMMV.

Oh, and don't fork for MG's in-house accessories- Supercheap Auto is your friend.

I liked the ev version too, deposit paid in Dec for one 'in stock', delivered 2 months later due to port clearance delays. A minor hiccup in the scheme of things.
Nice car, and well priced on a fbt free novated lease and VicGov grants.

    • Would probably go the BYD over the MG EV, on paper it pretty much cleans the floor.

      • I needed to choose between the two. I'd basically decided on BYD on paper, then test drove and found the drive on the MG much much nicer (for the way I drive anyway). BYD just felt heavy and a little ungainly, the modes didn't do a lot and there was no option for no sunroof and no pleather seats. If it drove like the MG it'd be a different story.

Admittedly having more convenient service places and dealers was in MGs favour too.

  • IMHO I think the OP would be better off chasing a low mileage 2nd hand Toyota, Hyundai or Kia. I'd expect the depreciation on these 'MG' cars to be very high, buying anything new will see you cop this badly but much worse on these.

Get something still with a bit of warranty to run and full service records, better cars and will likely over their ownership span end up costing a lot less in total costs (running + depreciation when sold).

I'd recommend stepping up to the ZST with the 1.3L turbo engine as the 1.5L on the ZS isn't great. The ZST comes with more bells and whistles as a bonus. There's also plenty of room for negotiation on the ZST models vs the ZS as I got mine for 10% off.

      • Sorry accidentally replied instead of commenting.

I don't know, any $100k+ "AMG" merc seems to go for the price of a box of cereal after 5 years from the looks of it.

  • Are you waiting for some confirmation that it’s OK to go ahead? Or waiting for all the ‘cHiNa CaR bAD’ comments to dismiss and go ahead anyway?

Just buy the damn thing if you want to.

  • NGL the MG's are probably one of the few chinese cars i'd stay away from. The reviews sound like the engines grenade themselves around 150,000k's in.

  • I'd probably go a Haval over MG if I had to buy a cheap Chinese car

  • Post and ghost.

    Nice
