When I activated a prepaid Optus SIM early last year, it just used my credit card to verify ID, but now I'm trying to activate a new SIM and it's asking for ID. If I go in person in store, will I be able to just show ID for them to sight or will they record the details? I'd rather not have ID details recorded by them if possible considering their track record…
Can You Activate Optus Pre-Paid Sim without ID?

No I believe it’s a govt requirement to prevent fraud/ criminal activity

If you don’t trust Optus with your data, go with another carrier
It just says:
ID check
The telco looks (visual check) at your documents, or uses a government service such as the Document Verification Service to check your ID.
They may also verify by:
using an existing post-paid or prepaid account
a real-time or time-delayed financial transaction.I'm fine with them just doing a visual check of documents in store if they don't record the details, that's why I was hoping someone would have past experience with in store activation. It also says they can verify by "a real-time or time-delayed financial transaction" which is what they seemed to do in the past, but why has that changed?
I'm not thrilled about going with Optus, but unfortunately they have the cheapest data roaming.
Its quite easy . Just go roaming with another special country's sim here. Of course you have to mess around setting up overseas .
Then Bob your uncle on the biz front with no govt interference.
Clue is just like emails . Stay far away from US companies where ASIO and other Govt Departments can get full access.I need a number that I can set up in Australia and can receive texts overseas for OTPs, because unfortunately my regular service is unable to roam at all.

Fixed it for you
If you wait until 9am i can call my coke dealer and find out….
He/she only works business hours? Annoying…
Oooh someone wants to sell drugs!
I think this question is related to the optus data leaks
Or selling drugs.
The data leaks are part of it. At least if I can activate with just a credit card I figure they're probably legally obligated not to store it, and if they do and it gets leaked, at least it's easier to get it changed. The other part is that I've had really bad experiences with their customer service in the past, which is absolute shit and will make assurances that they'll fix an issue but never do no matter how many times you chase it up and they just keep parroting that it'll be fixed in a few days, so I'd prefer to give minimal data to them. Unfortunately in this instance I can't find another company that offers what I need at a comparable price.
Pls tell me OP if you find the loophole ?
I can't find it .Some other Telcos do not ask for it.
