Southern Africa: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe- Sim Card?

Hello
I will be traveling to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe in two weeks.

I am concerned I wont have internet. And although it is great to have a break from my connected life, i still would like to be able to contact my relatives as my mother has been recently ill.

Any suggestions for sim card?

Another suggestion where to get some Rand before i go to South Africa?

I am bringing a Wise card with me.

Thank you!

Just walk into the phone shop and get a sim, there should be one in the airport. price points should be pretty similar.

cant tell you where to get Rand but I suggest you get ALL the cash you need from here and then bring it over (obv do not carry it all out with you at once) but IIRC most places just take CC's so cash wasnt necessary unless you wanted to go to the markets and stuff. We went over with a citibank debit card and it was so hard to find an ATM because it will charge you an ATM fee and a percentage fee or something like that, and the rates at currency exchangers over there werent great. i just bit the bullet and withdrew one time and made sure it lasted us.

make sure to bring a big capacity powerbank as the electricity keeps cutting out for hours. we stayed at a 5 star safari and that still went down.

+1 - it's really easy at the airport

    • Thank you! I was just very concerned I am arriving in Cape Town at 22:40.

But if it is easy, than i will not worry.

Just get your sim card at the border entry points for each country. At the airport or at fuel stations if you're doing border crossings. Often times when doing land border crossings there are guys outside the immigration building in vests branded with telco logos selling sims (they charge a small markup, but worth it for the convenience - maybe like a dollar extra).

When I went last year I got a local sim for each country i visited. Most sim cards surprisingly don't work well across neighbouring countries or they charge insane prices for 'roaming'.

Pro tip: always get them to install the sim card on your phone and make sure your data is working 100% before you pay for it - you'll avoid heaps of hassell.

    • Thank you! I will keep my eye on that.
