Reliable Network-Unlocked USB Internet Modems That Provide Internet via a SIM?

I want a network unlocked USB modem dongle, that provides internet via a SIM card, that I can plug into my normal internet router in case of extended NBN outages.

It would also be nice if it could function as a standalone Wi-Fi router to hotspot internet from a SIM card to a laptop or a car USB slot while on the go. I know mobile phones can do this, but looking for an alternative option.

I could not find many networked unlocked options. I saw some on Amazon AU, but reviews are mixed:

People complain about SIM cards from certain providers not being supported, or slow speeds that are vastly different to when they've got the sim card in another USB modem dongle, or unreliable connectivity that drops in and out.

There are seemingly identical products available for $20 via eBay, but there are only seller reviews, no product reviews.

Someone suggested buying a cheap Nokia phone and using that as a modem. but I would really like something that can be plugged into my more powerful Wi-Fi router, so I can use that to distribute internet to a broader area with a stronger signal, without needing to worry about a smartphone that needs to be charged or may overheat in warmer locations.

Are there any more reliable, network unlocked USB modem options, available from more reputable brands for a similar price, without having to buy a new router that supports a SIM card?

  • gl.inet travel routers with your phone attached via usb sharing it's internet.

    Nighthawk M6

  • The GL-X750V2 4G LTE Smart Router is really good - I used one as my primary connection while waiting for Starlink (no NBN in my location)…

If you're in SA I could let you have mine cheap - I don't use it any more.

    • I'll consider it, but I already have a router. I'm looking for something that can provide internet to it.

      • This will do that will ease - you can just plug it into the existing router's WAN interface and i'll work as expected.

  • Does your router support Android USB tethering for 4G/5G? Then you can indeed use any cheap Android phone as the unlocked 'modem' with wifi through your existing router. I think the Asus routers like the AC68U supported this, but you haven't specified your router.

  • Thanks, that's something I didn't think of, but note where I said:
