Rackmount Proxmox Server Build - Hardware Advice

Hi, I'm looking at putting together a proxmox server housed in a 4RU rack case such as this. The reason for this is that I already have a 14RU 500mm deep rack stand which houses audio gear (interface, eq, amp etc) and has space leftover for the above-mentioned case, meaning the server would essentially take up zero extra room. I'm not 100% tied to the idea of using such a case if it's going to be prohibitively expensive/inefficient, but it would be a neat solution if possible (deep boxes like rackmount poweredges etc are unfortunately too deep for the stand). I'm currently running proxmox (truenas/plex/home assistant/pihole etc) on an old 2nd gen intel desktop I scored for free, and while it does work, i definitely need more than the 16gb of RAM it has and probably more transcoding power for multiple simultaneous streams (although 1080p is fine for now, not looking at 4k at this stage).

so - I guess I'm after recommendations on what mobo/cpu/gpu might be suitable, assuming there aren't any local crazy marketplace bargains around. would something like this AE combo be reasonable? the specs sound decent but I have zero knowledge of how dodgy AE mobos may or may not be. I've been building standard desktop boxes for years but am still pretty new to server hardware, so any general advice is appreciated. cheers.

  • transcoding —— x99 comes with no iGPU, how viable is it?

also those doggy x99 board are likely using modded HM87 chipset…. I have some doubt on it.

if you are looking for low budget item with iGPU for transcoding, maybe QTJ1 or similar CPU + z170 DDR3 mobo suit you better? Though this is still doggy af.

    • oh nah i'd be looking at a discrete gpu as well, from what i've read some sort of quadro (possibly p1000?).

i don't really have a defined budget here, just what is cost-effective for what i'm trying to achieve. so yeah definitely not sold on the x99 and happy to hear any other suggestions.
