External HDD with Firewire?

Hey OzBargainers, just in the market for an external HDD for my Macbook Pro, portable or desk, but i was wondering what was avaiable (or cheap) with firewire as i just want the speed. USB 3.0 isn't compatible with a 2011 MBP right? and Thunderbolt is just ridiculously expensive?

Thanks in advanced guys (sorry if this has been asked recently)

Firewire drives are becoming rare as USB 3.0 comes in. I have a Seagate Go Flex and had to buy the Firewire800 adapter separately; they were being phased out a few months back. My advice is be quick.

Firewire is not as fast as it seems, I would hold of, Thunderbolt will fall in price now that it is on PC's.

I think you will be a loy happier if you hold of as the speed difference for thunderbolt is outstanding.

The reason I needed FireWire was to free up a USB slot (hey if it's there we might as well use it). Thunderbolt is taking its time and so far is pretty expensive.

The easy way for you is just go and get a hard disk enclosure and put a hard disk in.

If you really want a FireWire drive, you could try and get the WD MyPassport Studio. It is a bit pricey though at ~$2.50 per Gigabyte.

  • Sorry, just thinking about it. My maths was bad yesterday. It's about $125 for 500gb. So it's only about 25 cents per Gigabyte.
