Layover in China. Is a COVID Test Required?

Hi all,

I was looking to book a Rome > Shanghai > Melbourne flight(s) in late June with China Eastern which is currently the cheapest/most convenient option to return back to Aus after 6 weeks in Europe. The layover in Shanghai is ~5 hours and I have no intentions of entering/transiting China.

However, I can't seem to find any information regarding entry (layover) in China with regards to COVID testing. The only information I can find is regards to entry into China (landside). Has anyone recently had a layover in China? Would a PCR/RAT required prior to boarding in Rome?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi OP, I'm in the same boat. Per latest notice on Chinese Consulate http://sydney.china-consulate.gov.cn/eng/ggl/202301/t2023011… , it looks like COVID tests are required for all flights destinated to China (even the layover).

I don't mind taking the test in Australia, but getting one in Italy with English certificate is a hassle, I think.

Will call the Consulate today to confirm.

    • Called the Embassy n they says its required.

      • Thanks for replying!

The latest info I could find is that an at-home RAT would suffice (as of April 2023). However, I'm not too sure how factually correct this website is. https://crisis24.garda.com/alerts/2023/04/china-authorities-…

"… are exempt from the pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test requirement and can take an Antigen Rapid Test (ART) within 48 hours before boarding; airlines will no longer check COVID-19 test results for such passengers". Surprising to see Australia is not on the list of exempt countries!
