Food Inflation - Which Supermarket Is The Quickest and Most Aggressive With Price Hikes?

IMO, Aldi is leading the charge with the price hikes, followed by Colesworth, and lastly, IGA.

For example, the price of Aldi powdered milk went from $5 last year to $7, now $10!

Baked beans went from 65c to $1 at all the supermarkets expect for IGA (as of late march).

Everytime I go to Aldi (about once a month) I always get a shock when I see the significant price increases on products I have been purchasing for years.

It's good to see Coles has the "price lock" guarantee. It gives the consumer more certainty about prices in an inflationary market.

I have tried to stock up on non-perishables as much as possible but there are limits to how much one can purchase, store, and consume.

My kid likes frozen lasagnes, but Woolworths hiked those big time last week. Just checked and so did Coles…..sigh.
'On The Menu' brand jumped from $3.30 normal ($2.80 reguarly on sale) price to $4.50 for a tiny lasagne (and spaghetti etc). Bought a few 2 weeks ago at Coles for $2.80 luckily.
So thought I'll just get the home brand next time. Nope
Woolworths home brand went up to $4 for one. Aldi still $2.50. Coles $3. For now

I wish Aldi did delivery. It's the only reason I don't shop with Aldi.

They'd never be able to provide delivery because they're constantly out of common products. Or at least my local Aldi never gets them. They used to have a berry yoghurt but I haven't seen it for a year or more. Also an apricot coloured soap which they rarely get in, maybe 3 times a year, because when the store places an order the white and apricot are both just listed as the same code "soap" - so the useless @$%^! warehouse staff only ever send white. (The white one sets my skin on fire.) Lucky I bought 30x packs last time it was in stock or I'd have run out months ago and have to start the process of testing every soap on the market again.

I haven't seen skim milk powder since coNvid started. They didn't even have shredded cheese last time I was there. No raspberry jam. The list goes on. After a while of no stock they remove the price tags too which must mean they don't see many items so don't reorder them, because I see them in other Aldi stores so I know they're available, but never here.

They didn't even have the cheapest tissues the second last time I went. Tempura nuggets is another that rarely comes in stock. They had one packet of 4x chunky pies so I got the last one. Toilet rolls are only in stock 1 out of 5+ times.

Don't be lazy. Shred your own cheese.

        • I wish. Tried to once but it's murder on my hands (carpel tunnel). Then used a food processor but the cheese just gets stuck between the lid and the blade. And block cheese probably went up just like everything else so the small difference isn't worth the pain.

I was in Coles and all of youse can live on the $2.50 500g Hot Dogs and $10.50 Birdeye 1KG fish fingers .
The hot dogs were very passable ( I'm a fusspot ) and both deserve a deal on here hehe .

  • I don't really take notice of a few dollar difference.
I grocery shop on set weekly budget and the difference in amount of food I get has not significantly changed.
I buy on price not brand/products when I can so brand changes all the time though. A decent bag of chips is a decent bag of chips to me.
I fill with what I need in the 1/2 price pages first.

For example, the price of Aldi powdered milk went from $5 last year to $7, now $10!

It went to $10 at all of them within a few days of each other. They're all scumbags.

Also the Aldi near me hasn't had skim milk for a year or more. They only ever get full cream. Skim makes 10L but full cream only makes 7L making it even worse value.

  • Don't worry everyone cattle is down 40% in the market meaning we might soon get a 5% steak discount

  • woolworths just put pepsimax up from $24 for a 30pk last week to $35 this week!
