Ebike Lock Recommendations to Keep My Ride Safe

I recently purchased an eBike, and I'm loving the convenience and ease of riding it around town. However, I'm also concerned about its security when I need to leave it unattended outside.

I'm looking for recommendations for good eBike locks that will keep my bike secure and give me peace of mind when I'm away from it. I'm open to any type of lock - U-lock, chain lock, folding lock, etc. - as long as it's effective and reliable.

If you have any suggestions or personal experiences with eBike locks that you'd like to share, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How much is your e-bike?

This is the pinnacle of of bike locks at the moment. Angle grinder resistant. Takes about 3 blades to cut through it.

    • I wonder how it compares to https://altorlocks.com/products/saf-lock

    • Even if their claim of being angle grinder resistant is true, whatever you are chaining it to won't be as strong. Alternatively, a thief could cut the bike which is very easy. I have lost a bike where the lock was still intact, but the bike gone. I'm assuming they cut my frame.

  • Any lock can also be easy if the thief locked on your bike, a angle grinder 10 seconds or 15 seconds to cut open lock, chains, steel wire.

Advice is not park at the same location for extended period of time ,not buying a experience bike and removing the battery.

You have to lock the bike to a bigger structure otherwise the bike can just be picked up, put in the back of a wagon or ute in seconds, then deal with the lock later.

A few motocross bikes were stolen in my area. They had locks but the bikes weren't tethered to anything as another layer of defence. 2 blokes can pick up a 100kg dirt bike onto a trailer quite easily.

  • here's some free advice, don't ride or leave bike in 'that part of town'

  • get one of these…..Kryptonite Evolution 11-14mm U-Lock with FlexFrame-U Bracket
really secure u-lock with a cable to secure your back/front wheel if an ebike hub

There is a big difference between “leaving it out the front of the milk bar for 5mins” versus “parking in the alley behind a pub overnight”.
Most locks are fine for the first option, nothing can fix the problems with the second.

Get a GPS tracker for it. You can get AirTag mounts for under the seat and some GPS units fit down the inside of the seat stem tube to hide them…

If they want your bike bad enough, nothing is going to stop them. Locks are there to deter opportunistic thieves and honest people. At least with a GPS tracker, you will know where they have taken it.

wouldn't you just take the battery out of the airtag?

      • +2

Because you hide it and it mounts in such a way that you can’t just “take the battery out” without the right tools to dismantle the mounting.

Don't bike thieves know where to look for a GPS tracker?

  • If you don’t have a routine parking spot, pretty much any half decent bike lock will prevent the opportunistic thieves. Nothing will stop a determined thief, or one who knows where your bike is parked and how long you’ll be - they’ll just come back tomorrow with better tools.

Get something that is long enough to wrap around a large structure in case they’re aren’t convenient bike racks or other things.

I just use a basic combo lock when I go to the shops, but it’s not a terribly dodgy area, the bike racks are in public view and I don’t take long. Plus I choose not to lock up my valuable bike in public, I take a cheaper one for that.

Do you use an iPhone? If so this might help: https://www.amazon.com.au/Bracket-Attachment-Included-Standa…

    • If the bike thieves can cut through a U-Lock then getting this thing off would take seconds.

      • if they see it. It's designed to be hidden behind a bidon cage.

Locks are more a visual deterrent than an effective one. Bigger the better and never get a combination unit. An angle grinder with a diamond blade will cut through anything, but you generally don't find opportunistic thieves walking around with them and they are the ones who steal bikes.

8mm chain and padlock is sufficient, Bunnings has one made up.

  • No matter how you secure it, junkies will come along and steal it with bolt cutters or however they can.

    (1) We have AXA wheel locks on my Dutch bike and my wife’s e-bike. Permanently attached to the bikes so always with us. Super convenient to just lock the bike, remove the key and walk off.

For anything longer than a 5-minute “pop into the shop” we use the chain to attach the bike to something, but still very easy as the chain just clicks into the AXA wheel lock / key.

No idea how strong these are, but will defeat the opportunistic thief.

    (2) Check your insurance. Your bike may be covered under your home contents insurance.

I should have looked into this before my ebike got pinched- on the night before my wife’s funeral. Fkn scum.

I’m a fan of high tensile 1/2” chain, an expensive sliding bolt type lock (not u shaped or normal keyed- pref circular key), and “smart” surveillance gear plus GPS tagging.

Suffice it to say the crackhead who pinched my (dead wife’s) bike is lucky I didn’t have a tracker on it… given I saw no life or light at that time, it would not have ended well.

    • Any products you recc?

      • I use truckies high tensile 1/2” chain and an abec cylinder lock

  • To be honest I was really worried about this but after 3 years I realise that there are only 2 scenarios
    1. I'm grabbing a coffee or lunch in a public area during the day and you really just need something to stop someone walking away with the bike
    2. The bike is unattended overnight and as others have said there is nothing that will stop a determined thief

The best advice I can give is to get something that looks the part and will deter casual thieves and don't leave the battery on the bike overnight as the bike is way less attractive to a thief without the battery. The first lock I bought was really heavy. I've since bought a second lock that looks similar to the first one but is only half the weight.
