Is It Worth Paying More for a Better Brand 50 Inch 4K UHD TV

Hi, I am looking to buy a 50 inch 4K TV.

The problem is that brands like Hisense, Toshiba and TCl are selling for $500 to $600 and Sony, Samsung and LG are selling for $800 to $1000 for same size and resolution. My question is that is it worth spending the extra for more bigger brands?

Thanks.

Why don't you go in store and look for yourself. If you can't see a difference then buy the cheaper one.

      Store conditions are fake.

It's best to look at a tv in your home conditions.

      • But how do they do that? I don't think your comment is helpful.

Depends what you want out of it. The cheaper ones will skimp on specs like processor making menus & smart features quite slow and sluggish as well as other features like HDR quality being quite poor.

If you're just watching free to air reality show garbage then they'll do fine. If you're watching Blu-Rays and playing PS5 then might want the better ones.

Rtings.com is a good source for detailed reviews of TVs. Note some models may have different international designations.

1k is still bad for tv. Need to get to the 1.5k range then they get to good

    Without a small flaw.

  • I have an lg OLED a TCL 4K led and a cheap falcon 4K.

The picture quality on all the tvs is acceptable for general viewing.

For watching 4K, nothing beats the quality of the lg OLED tv.

Moving along functions and features the cheap tv cannot match the usability of the lg movies streaming moving around menu features.

TV to watch free to air, most tvs will do but to watch high quality movies with high quality features spend the money it will save you money in the long run.

  • Worth spending more for OLED and HDR, but not sure there is much in it when talking about different LED manufacturers :/

And, as above, really depends what you want to do/watch - free to air TV, just get the cheapest panel you can find :P

  • hell yea. i went with samsung the colours popped more and great for video games. sony has great colour for dramatic movies. LG would come in 3rd. the rest i don't care about.
I did come from the cheap TV's thinking i will pay 1/2 the price for the same thing and same stats and features. boy was i wrong once i purchased my samsung. i say invest in your tv because you really won't be buying another one for a long time and the cost is cheap if you divide it by the years of ownership.
buy once, cry once. instead of buy cheap, buy twice.

  • yes, real HDR with at least zoned backlighting is worth it. The smaller the zones the better, or individually lit pixels if you can afford it. Makes a huge difference. You ideally want bright areas of the screen to be blindingly bright while black areas pitch black at the same time. Light at the end of a tunnel scenes should feel like a flashlight shining at you in a dark room.

  • Is there a reason you're thinking 50"? Given price compared to size ratio these days, you can get far better value on the 65-75" ranges.

  • Hi OP I was actually doing research on this last night. I found a subreddit where they warned against the low end LG and Samsung, they surprisingly seem pro TCL. As for Hisense apparently the Aus market is getting ripped off in some way with the internals?

  • Was going to buy a hisense TV after seeing many praises on here. But as soon as I got instore and was able to compare to well known brands, we spent the extra money so our movie experience isnt ruined.

    • Ins't 50 inch too small for watching movie? I think 50 inch or less is good for news, talk shows that you pay less attention to the quality of the picture. Thus, the purpose of it needs to be considered first.

      • I didn't bother looking ta 50inch, only 65" and greater.
Whether 50 inch is too small or not also depends on Ops living area or where op plans to put TV.
Once you're used to quality picture, the shit ones are more obvious. We don't even bother with our smaller older bedroom TV anymore.

  • If you are going to use the built in apps, avoid Samsung, as they don't do any further lifecycle development, once manufactured. 1-2 year old Samsung cannot render Bitchute, problem has been reported, and they have no inclination to update the old web module. Compare to a LG TV of the same vintage, it works flawlessly and OS seems more polished and up to date, not sure about cheaper brands.

    • Get a Chromecast or google tv.

Much faster then the tv apps.

      • The Android TV on my Smart TV is really good, I stopped using my Shield TV since there was no difference

  • Thanks, ended up getting Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K, when it was half price.
