Let's say you're going to Melboune from Sydney or the other way around carrying minimal luggage… do you bother with travel insurance?
Do You Bother with Domestic Travel Insurance
Comments
I only buy domestic travel insurance where it works out the cheapest way to cover rental car insurance excess
As above, mostly for travel insurance car excess. Usually for a trip of more than a weekend though. Otherwise just cop any extra costs.
I use this one for shorter trips and 1-day loaner cars: Rental Car Protection but there are many competitors
Only if flying with Jetstar!
Now we have Bonza the doc tells me to put the affairs in order?
It's never even occurred to me that people would buy insurance for domestic travel. Just a weird idea.
Dumb people pay the travel agent for ticket and insurance.
Others buy online and use a card to pay that comes with travel insurance.Although medical costs are not covered on domestic policies, it can cover cancelling pre-paid accomodation, or accomodation that can't be cancelled within a few days of staying. But to claim cancellation fees, they require formal medical certificates, so you have to have a doctor certify that the travel plans have to be changed. That can be difficult to get while on holiday. I've only used World2Cover for a claim, and found out they only pay either the cancellation fees OR the alternative accomodation. The claim process was difficult, took several weeks and a dozen calls and emails back and forth. But a $100 policy for a family trip for 8 days ended up paying out $510 for a change in accomodation when we came down with gastro. Still less than the change cost us of course because of the excess and only paying one out of the cancelled accommodation or the new accommodation.
Home and contents insurance can often cover valuables outside the home too.Depends on value. Quick flight, no. My attempt at a Ghan trip (which did get hit by the Covid lockdowns) - absolutely.
Usually, the flights, accommodation and most other things are fixed costs that won't bankrupt us. When travelling overseas, it's the emergency medical expenses overseas that are not covered by Medicare that can be crazy and unpredictable. Domestically, we've got public hospitals and healthcare that will take care of us in the event of a medical emergency.
So the risk of a major unplanned cost to an individual is relatively small for domestic travel.
Yes I get insurance whenever I get off at Bankstown station
My credit card comes with complementary travel insurance (international and domestic). Have claimed through credit card's insurer for missed flights, overnight accomodation, lost luggage and transport to and from overnight accomodation. Very easy and hassle free process. Just filled in an application form, sent them PDFs of tax invoices and receipts. Got compensation less excess in less than 10 business days straight to personal bank account.
I tend to buy my travel insurance for medical reasons. Like if I were to accident break my leg or get hit by something overseas. Domestic travel I am covered by private health insurance and Medicare so I don't see a need. I make sure I don't bring anything on travel that are irreplaceable.
