Installed a ASUS DSL-AX82U Modem/Router & My Synology DS918+ NAS Disappeared

I just bought and installed a new ASUS DSL-AX82U modem-router to replace my dead Netcomm.

WiFi works but a Synology DS918plus NAS which is connected to the modem via ethernet cable (same as my previous setup) has disappeared. All other devices are connected to the modem via WiFi.

I can however access previously created mapped network drives on the NAS on my Win 10 desktop but can't get to the NAS administration area. Previously, I just typed the NAS's IP address and up it came.

The problem has to be some simple setting I haven't got right ….. Can anyone please help? Thanks.

  • Have you tried the Synology Assistant app to find the NAS?
Do you remember if you previously set a fixed IP address for your NAS?

I can however access previously created mapped network drives on the NAS on my Win 10 desktop

This is a very good clue. This means:
    1. Your NAS is working using your new router
    2. Mapped drive is still accessible
    3. But can’t access admin area using old IP
    4. Therefore the NAS IP has changed

If the goal is to just access the NAS admin area:
    1. Go to your router admin
    2. Look at the DHCP/LAN Client List
    3. You should see your new NAS IP there

Alternatively, if you name your NAS, you can open it via browser with \\NASNAME:PORT or ping it this way.

You should technically assign a static IP to your NAS with DHCP reservation, but looking at your question and understanding your tech skill, I don’t want to confuse you with the different IP range used by the different routers, so just keep it simple, find the new NAS IP per above.

  • use https://xxxx. Synology.me to login, also find out your NAS new IP address internally.

  • There are apps you can use to map a network and see what ip addresses are being used

  • I'd say it's on a different IP Range, e.g 192.168.1.x vs 192.168.0.x or something else
You might need to fire up the old modem and then match that ip range on the new one

    • The Old IP range was 192.168.20.xx while the new is 192.168.50.xx

The NAS IP address must have been fixed as it's in the old modems range - but when I enter the IP original IP address the NAS can't be found.

      I'm confused.

      Does that help?

        Yes, immensely.
They would have been on different subnet ranges.

All you have to do is:

        1. Go to your router and set the subnet mask to: "255.255.0.0"
        2. Restart your computer and ensure that your computer now also has "255.255.0.0" as the subnet mask.
        3. Now you can access the Synology NAS @ 192.168.50.xx
        4. Once inside the Synology NAS, adjust the subnet mask and static IP address as appropriate (make it 255.255.0.0)

        5. Optional: Bring the IP of the network and/or NAS to use the IP range and subnet desired

        Easier and Alternate Solution:
        1. Go to your router and set the IP range to use the old IP range and subnet.

  • It could be becuase there is a some sort of firewall on your router (I dont know the Asus ones) blocking port 5000 which you use for the interface but allows SMB.

  • Did you call the cops?

    maybe it's under the couch

  • It's ok. I found it!

Managed to get old modem working (turned out to be faulty power plug).
Changed the fixed IP address in the NAS to match the range in the new modem.

Thanks once again for all the advice. :-)
