Cheap accommodation (excl backpackers) in Sydney CBD?

Hi guys & gals,

Heading to Sydney next month. Just wondering if you guys could suggest cheap accommodation in Sydney CBD (no backpackers please)? Had bad experience with backpacker, so would rather avoid, especially when my parents are following too. Site & places to book will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • in the same boat. i wish i knew if there were some hotels i could mystery shop ? that way I could recoup some of the costs. I guess its time to redeem the a-club vouchers and put the platinum aclub card to use.

  • I saw this

but have to sit through 90 min Wyndham timeshare presentation!
    Husband says "No thanks".
Not a local so don't know much about it, just $199 for 4 nights is great.

    • +2

go to the presentation, stare at them blankly, and then speak a 'foreign language" using many hand gestures, raise your tone considerably and then tip the table over and walk out.

  • Why not try one of these: http://www.lastminute.com.au/accommodation/australia/sydney/…
They are sure to be better than a backpackers, prices starting from just over $100/night. I doubt you'll find much cheaper than that (heck, our very close to CDB rent is $90/night).

  • Buzymum20 thanks for that. im considering it but i have 2 infants I see the deal is for 2 adults and 2 children but i wonder if the kids would be allowed to attend the 90minute time share presentation? i think it will be difficult as they will get bored and start crying. I also wonder if this apartment has free car parking?

    • A few years ago we went to a timeshare presentation with 2 kids under 18 (one was 15) and they put them into a creche type room next door. The 15 year old was not amused and still refers to the room (as we go past it on holidays each year) "where the kids are held hostage". Seriously though, the younger child, 10 had a good time and younger children would be entertained. But be prepared, they are very 'heavy' and try to sign you up. That's why my husband won't have a bar of it now.

  • +1 to wotif & lastminute!

I've had some great cheap stays at really nice places with the mystery/secret hotels they offer too! With a tiny bit of detective work you can mostly find out the venue well in advance as well: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/11/how-to-know-your-myster… :)

  • Tripraider claims to 'out' Secret/Mystery rooms http://www.tripraider.com/
Also, take a look at travelzoo — there is a $99 hotel on this page which may suit. http://www.travelzoo.com/au/hotels/australia/

Enjoy your trip to Sydney :-)

  • Timeshare presentations are easy.

    Just meet the pre-conditions.

    Attend.

At start say you are only there for the freebie and nothing else.

Then just say you politely decline to answer any more questions or provide any other written or verbal information.

Be silent and pleasant and politely decline everything.

At the end of 90 mins the manager comes over.

Just politely decline for private personal reasons.

    Grab your freebies and go.

Always best to attend as a single person because they try to use every emotional trick in the book against couples.

But if you politely decline everything the sales reps have very little room to move and nothing to get their hooks into.
