Hertz Car Rental Nightmare

Hey guys!
I'm leaving for an overseas trip in 40 hours! Been looking forward to this for couple years as it's our long overdue trip.
So I booked car rental via Hertz 6 weeks ago. Paid 500ish full, got confirmation email. Payment cleared on same day, all sweet.
Couple weeks ago checked car rental, printed off everything along with tickets, all was sweet.
Yesterday opened up Hertz booking, it now says I have to pay 2k at counter at time of pick up. My previous payment and original booking price isn't showing. The daily rate has increased by 4 times for the car on this previously confirmed booking.

Only thing that has changed in between is Hertz customer service added my drivers licence into booking from my Hertz online account.

Because of this "modification" to booking, it quadrupled my already confirmed and paid booking.

Was on phone with Hertz for 2 hours+, nothing was resolved. They admitted they can see original paid booking. And then booking changed with pending 2k payment and they not sure how it happened. And they didn't know what to do….

Has anybody had this issue before? Not sure how else to approach this.

    Where are you going?

Just jump on all the price comparison sites and make another booking.

    Get a refund from Hertz.

    • Vancouver Island. Initial customer service could not see the payment or oroginal booking. After few transfers managed to get through to an an executive person, only he could see the cleared payment and original booking. However that was the most help he could provide. :(

  • Call the Hertz station where you will pick-up the car overseas (not the Aussie number) and ask them the question, most likely a system glitch but as you have printout of original reservation / amount due / payment you should be fine!

    • Thanks, definitely worth a try

  • car rental via Hertz 6 weeks ago. Paid 500ish full,

you are absolutely dreaming that was the full price…..

      Great bargain!

    • where at?! i paid Aud $502 for 8 days in Germany for BMW 4wd equivalent, ended up with an Alfa Romeo instead but it was a pretty damn good car. Oct 2018 with Hertz

      • in Munich middle of Winter dropped off in Berlin
was a very large Volvo wagon S90

        • Ah, I did Cologne to Munich. Germany is so damn beautiful, i think its driving around there is one of the things everyone should do once in a lifetime

          • @MeesusEff: I find driving in Switzerland and Austria or even France more picturesque and interesting. Many parts of Germany are rather flat and industrial, even the small-town folks weren't very friendly.

@ass3ts: True I have seen some clips on Switzerland and it looks amazing, but I feel the prices of everything there would definitely bring me down lol. We drove downward in Germany through the Black Forest, then Fussen and it's definitely a whole different range of sights. I have heard Germany is pretty racist towards Asians but luckily I had a good experience.

Paris just dulled my whole experience of France. Maybe we'll go regional instead of we ever go back.

          • @MeesusEff: Driving in Germany is like driving in Victoria. Just opposite side of the road but faster. Lol

Yeh $500 seems suspiciously cheap for hertz, $1000000 sounds more believable.

  • Hertz main business is screwing customers. This is well known.

    $2000 more? Oof that hertz

  • Sounds like the modification has picked up the current live rate.

Double check the date and time of pickup and drop off.

Lol, booking with a totally bankrupt company! Should have known!

Yes same thing has happened to me. Had a confirmed booking in Calgary for around $500. On checking the booking now on the website it has changed to $1500. I have not amended the booking in any way. Have contacted Hertz several times and no one can explain or help me. My booking is not til September but I have booked an alternative cause I don’t trust Hertz any more

  • Ahhhh globalisation, where the non-rich have even less rights/recourse.

During lower seasons and at bigger airports, I find it better to just select one of the available cars from the rows of counters when you arrive at the airport. Done this many times all around the world with no real issues.

Maybe the $2,000 is a hold on your credit card for damages?

  • Its probably just pre-charging you for the fuel top up for when you bring it back 10L short.

  • I heard something similar happening to a colleague. Rates went up when they provided their drivers license and were told it's coz international drivers license has different rates applied to them than local. Initial booking was based on local rates. Thought it was odd.

  • I just booked a Hertz car from LHR on the phone and the agent said any “modifications” to the booking could invoke a rate change. I assume this is a bit a Hertz loophole and what has happened to you.
