Rego + Comprehensive Insurance + CTP - Selling soon

Hi All,

My rego + ctp + comprehensive insurance are all due shortly, but I am planning to sell my car in the next few months or so.

If I pay all of them for the full year, when I sell my car, will I get back pro-rata amount for all of them by calling ServiceNSW and the insurance companies?
Or, is it better to pay monthly (if available) or half-yearly?

I think yearly is cheaper for at least comprehensive insurance but want to make sure I can get the pro-rata amount refunded after the car is sold.

Thanks

Depends. Who are you with? Look them up on the internet, find out their contact details, and ask them.

    Can do 6 months rego.

For Comprehensive, you can easily claim a pro-rata portion back.

For CTP & Rego, just add the cost on top of your vehicle price and list it as a perk.

  • Depends on the state.

My state gives you the option of paying reg & CTP by the month, for 3 months, or for 12 months. There's a lot of people who if they had to pay a year ahead they wouldn't be able to find the money, and they'd drive unregistered. Comprehensive insurance can be paid by the month or the year.

He's in NSW, hence the reference to ServiceNSW.

    • and they'd drive unregistered.

      That's illegal.

  • You will not get your rego back, and you will not be able to sell your car for more because it has a long rego period left on it. Pay for the minimum only (six months in NSW).

I don't know of any insurance companies that won't refund the remainder of your contract period pro-rata, although they will round it up to the end of the full month but that's a thing regardless.

  • Rego and CTP on selling a car can only be incorporated on the selling price and not refunded. So you might only get back what you spent if you sell it well, likely you will only get a good portion back not all.

  • You can only get rego/CTP back if you deregulated the vehicle. Adding max rego to the vehicle is a selling point. If money is a bit short, you can always choose 6months rego. It costs a little more on a per month basis, but you won’t need to shell o her as much. Flip side to that is that you won’t have as long rego on when t only sell. If it’s an older vehicle more rego is preferable for buyers because they won’t need an inspection and potential repairs as soon

    • if I choose 6 months, I have to do another pink slip to renew for another 6 months?
Or the pink slip is valid for 12 months regardless how long I pay the rego for?

      • Pink slip is valid for 6 months. I don't know if you can squeeze that within the 6 months for the next 6mo rego. Probably could
