So, I am all for the cheap. I bought one from Jaycar ages ago that honestly lasted me forever and had great distance and it was $40.
So I firmly believe you can get quality USB Wi-Fi adapter for that price or less.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Ask on your local Facebook groups, chances are loads of people have them laying around and would gladly give them away to get rid of them.
Of all the things to get free from strangers, a usb device is one of the ones i would rule out. Maybe I’m too paranoid.
Is it normal to ask for free stuff from randoms?
Seems a bit tacky to me
I have a few “Hard Rubbish Rescue” groups where it is the entire purpose of the group. But even my local “Good Karma” networks, it’s very common to ask for something before going out to buy new.
Ah ok, didn't know such groups existed. Makes sense now.
@FireRunner: All good, not many people do know about them which is why I always suggest it - they’re a great place to get items, usually in near perfect condition, for free.
Cheapest one sourced in Aus that I have personally used is this one for $15

Seems fine so far more than 12 months in.
I’ve also used a bunch of tplink/ netgear/ dlink ones over the years (I maintain 15 computers at our office) and no real difference reported from anyone.
