AFL and Amazon to Introduce Just Walk out Technology at Marvel Stadium - Could We Soon See Amazon Go Stores?

As per the article

The AFL has announced today that Marvel Stadium will become the first venue in the Southern Hemisphere to introduce Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology for checkout-free purchases.

The new technology will be available at two outlets known as ‘The Runner’—one food and beverage and one bar—in time for the early rounds of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. Fans will simply use their credit or debit card, or mobile wallet payment option at entry, collect their items, and leave the store without having to wait in line to checkout. In the time it takes for a goal break, a Marvel Stadium fan will be able to get the refreshments they need without missing any of the action.

Just Walk Out technology is made possible by artificial intelligence like computer vision and deep learning techniques, including generative AI, to accurately determine who took what in any retail environment. Amazon built synthetic datasets to mimic millions of realistic shopping scenarios—including variations in store format, lighting conditions, and even crowds of shoppers—to ensure accuracy in any environment.

This lead me to wonder, as this appears to be the same technology already in use in Amazon Go stores, whether we could soon see them start to open up in Australia?

I dunno how popular they'd be, but I suppose people would use them more for the novelty and experience.

It'll be interesting how it works inside Marvel stadium, I'd personally imagine there'd be a queue just to get in because some people would have issues with their phone and wouldn't understand the concept and maybe the number of people that can physically be in there will be limited, so a large crowd at halftime would have to queue just to enter so as to not overload the system.

It's a bit like saying, Kmart uses NCR cash registers, the same as Walmart in the USA. Do you think that means we'll see Walmart soon?
    In other words, not related.

    • Not sure why the neg, this is spot on.

If anything, Amazon have been claiming they’re leading this tech, so for someone else to bring it here before them is a bit of an insult, surely?

      • Not really. 1. Walmart didnt develop NCR cash registers 2.Amazon is already in Australia, and Amazon Go is known for this technology. its not a stretch to think they would expand the same way here as they have in the US/UK. Im not sure why you think its an insult when Amazon are letting them use their technology

  • So the AI is scanning what I purchased and then charged my CC directly?
How do I know if it is not going to charge me a random amount?

    Here's a video

I am doubtful of the accuracy. It did not even provide a receipt

It does provide a receipt, you can easily dispute items and be instantly refunded it is ran on an honesty system.

      • Getting a refund from any business is hard.

Wow that six year old video showing off six year old technology, it must be the same technology they're using now with zero improvements!

  • Oooh i hope so. Ive been waiting for this to come to Australia

      I wouldn’t get too excited.

Prices in Amazon Fresh in London (the UK version of Amazon Go) were about 20% higher than at the nearby Tesco/Sainsburys (which would have been <200m away).

It’ll be comparable to a 7/11 or IGA express, but not a Colesworth. So if you don’t currently shop at an overpriced convenience store, it will only be a short lived gimmick.

Im more excited for the technology to come here. Who knows, Coles/Woolworths may use it in the future. Aldi is trialling it in other countries and starbucks and whole foods are using it in america

  • What happens if you walk in with $50 on the card you tap on at entry, transfer the money into savings (card balance now $0), walk out and leave with the items? How is there any recourse as you don’t need an account just a card?

      Then you're shoplifting

      • Obviously, I’m just saying it is a bit of a flaw if this hasn’t been thought of.

  • …in time for the early rounds of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season….

The AFL season is about to start round 4 (out of 24 rounds). Even though this 'announcement' was made by the AFL yesterday, it could already be considered late.
