Which Power Tool Brand Would You Recommend?

Hey Guys!

I would like to know which power tool brand you would recommend to an apprentice or just which brand you would recommend to someone in general.

I'm aware that different professions might prefer specific brands due to the specialized tools they offer, but I'd appreciate your overall suggestions.

As an apprentice carpenter, I use Makita's 18V tools, but sometimes I find their power lacking compared to Milwaukee's 18V range, especially the impact driver. However, I've noticed that the lower power is compensated by the reliability of my Makita tools. I've seen Milwaukee tools frequently returned to the shop for repairs. For instance, a friend of mine bought a brand-new Milwaukee impact driver, and it failed just two days later. Meanwhile, I've never experienced issues with any of my Makita tools.

  • Didn't Elton John write a song about something like Nikita?
Well TTC is the one to -tube!

  • As far as I know Makita has about a dozen different impact drivers that range from rubbish to very good. Your underpowered experience might be less about the brand, and more about the model.

Milwaukee's top-of-the-line impact driver is 226Nm while Makita's top model is 180Nm, so there is quite a bit of difference, but measurement methods might be different and I don't think you would feel any radical difference.

    • True, although that may be accurate, I believe that Makita's top of the line 18V impact driver may not have the same level of power as Milwaukee's leading 18V impact driver.

You can find this out yourself OP. Let us know how the battle of the M's went.

Or else there is a not so destructive and smoke free method which is by googling the specs of both drivers and check out the Torque figures.

I've got Milwaukee, but if I had my time again would go dewalt or makita.
I've had too many issues with Milwaukee and the wait times for repair are ludicrous.

Yep, this is consistent to what I hear around the worksite, A Chippy I've worked with said he had to wait 10 weeks when his Milwaukee Circular Saw broke. He ended up purchasing another Milwaukee saw in the meantime to continue working.

About 4 weeks in to my top of the line impact it shit itself, out 12 weeks, dreadful communications.
They're good when they work, but when it's for work you can't really afford it

  • Hm…. I am sure that power tool brand has never been asked on this forum before, or even the internet.

Project Farm YouTube. He has the answer.

  • Makita make the worst radios. I've thought about buying a M18 radio as I have some M12 gear but can't justify swapping over and their framing guns are nitrogen gas filled that leak.
I bought the Hikoki framing and finishing gun last year that run well but weigh a ton same as M18, I may swap over slowly from Makita to Hikoki if they do a good radio for the right price. If not I'll stay with makita.

  • Used Milwaukee then Makita over last 10 years for work. They are both good but in the end I went all Makita about 5 years ago.. I have had no problems with any Makita stuff, but had some Milwaukee failures under warranty. 2 x batteries, 2 x chargers, a rotary hammer and a ratchet.

I think you would be happy with either of these 2 brands but Dewalt/Bosch/Hikoki etc are also great brands. Probably the most important thing is which brand has the tools that you need and has tools that you may want in the future. Also think about what you may want for home use such as outdoor power tools like blowers, hedge trimmers, mowers etc. Makita definitely has a better selection in this range and is also a bit cheaper.

  • Ive had Milwaukee for years… have been faultless and for 18v tools I think they're the best.

But… they're the most expensive and they're refusal (which they are trying to backflip on) to not run 36v (2x18v) took me to makita.

So far, makita has been great… but i would say… just buy the biggest combo you can. They never have specials and individual skins are expensive.
