Any Ideas to Prevent Bolt from Coming off Thread

Hi, just have a bolt and nut but just wanted to make sure the nut doesn't screw off/loosen

Wondering how effective thread lock- if I use this is it permanent…i.e I can't remove or tighten the nut further?
Any other options? Especially something I can get from Bunnings?

Thanks!

Nyloc nut may work, what's the application?

Loctite threadlocker, located in Bunnings paint department.

    • Am I able to undo and tighten the bolt after using it thought..or is it glued

      • It can be removed with solvent and a wire brush, there are different types with different strengths so maybe have a look and see. The problem with using something that can be removed easily is that it will also move easily when you don't want it to.

You can undo and tighten but then you have broken the bond and have to re-apply.

What are you trying to keep together?

      • Ask the thread lock supplier for datasheets.
        Horses for courses!

  • Nyloc, another nut as a lock but, spring washer, Loctite, still a hole and split pin/tie wire etc etc. What you use completely depends on what this bolt/but is securing, and how important it is that it doesn't come loose, also whether you will need to remove it at some point.

  • LOCTITE red 271 seemed to be pretty damn solid from my limited use.

If you just want it to be unlikely to loosen by itself, use a spring washer.

If you want it to not loosen, but be able to be removed, use a Nyloc nut.

If its unlikely you'll ever want it to be removed, but its possible, used Loctite.

If you want it to be permanent, don't use a nut and bolt. Use something permanent, like a rivet or a weld.

  • Cheap solution for the threads on our cupboards has been masking tape

  • weld the nut on, won't come off without an angle grinder

  • GordonD has given the best advice. Choice depends on the application. Where is this nut being used?

  • Threadlocker. It's just paste that you apply to the thread.

Wrong. It’s an anaerobic adhesive. It develops full strength when air (oxygen) is squeezed out under pressure from tightening the gap between nut & bolt.
If it was just a paste, you might as well use vegemite

Don't tell us where this bolt is, whether it's horizontal or vertical, or on a vehicle or not, outdoors or indoors. Let us use our psychic powers to help figure it out.

Lol. I went and saw a psychic last week.

I knocked on the door and she said "who is it?"

      I turned around and left.

Cheapest option is to damage thread so it can't come off. Use a hammer and cold chisel to stake the end so it spreads out and the nut won't fit over.

Or angle grind it I guess

  • What’s the application? There’s a few options for preventing a nut from coming loose.

  • Loctite Purple is the one you need.

  • If it's a smaller nut and bolt use fingernail polish, you will also be able to undo it.

  • Spring washer will help

  • threadlock
    washer
    extra nut
    weld
    lots of swearing
