Rodent Repellent for Car?

Anyone have any first hand experience with under the bonnet rat deterrents?

Amazon have some electronic ones and some peppermint spray ones but not sure how reliable the reviews are.

Cheers

  • Solar powered flashing lights is what we use. So far so good.Low down near engine bay/bumper area.
If you can stand the smell of Vicks. lightly coat a few areas where they directly need to walk, or might chew.
If you are able to leave the bonnet up overnight.
(Have yet to read any definitive proof ultrasonic devices work. If you find a real world Australian trial that endoreses it post a link.I'd be keen to read it.)

    • Cheers, can you link me up to the flashing lights you use?

My car has 2 cats. I think they keep away the rodents.

You're not funny, try harder, instead of spewing non-sense response to someone who's actually asking for help.

he is like JV but so much more irritating

        • +1. The guy is irritating AF, keeps popping up on threads but doesn't add value, rather finds most questions asked as funny.

  • Don't park your vehicle in the same spot every night but if you have to, put the bonnet/hood up.
Also, get those hanging Hovex Camphor widgets from Colesworth and hang them in various parts of the engine bay.

New fear unlocked by this post. Never occurred to me this can happen. Is this in a home garage or somewhere rural or outdoors?

    • We're semi rural and closing the garage door doesn't really have too much of an effect due to the large downstairs area, hence looking for a viable deterrent.

Did spot this this morning which looks promising, but also expensive. Waiting on a price.

  • Sorry to hear you need this! I went down this rabbit hole a couple of years ago after rodents chewed through a wiring harness and set off a Christmas tree of lights on our instrument cluster.

Luckily, it was a $x00 repair, and not the "complete transmission and engine failure" the initial tech's OBD reading suggested.

The rodents seem to have targeted the vehicle due to warmth. I nearly bought Honda's tape laced with capsacin (part 4019-2317, but instead you should read this hilarious review by a nutter who tasted it!) but the cost of shipping to Australia seemed a bit much. I had no access to electrical power in our apartment's communal carpark to put in more active measures, and didn't want to risk draining the car battery with something wired in-vehicle.

I ended up not doing anything to the vehicle but made some adjustments elsewhere - inc baits and traps round the vehicle, ensuring our neighbours kept lids on the communal bins in our basement carpark, etc. We live right next to some restaurants and shop bins, so I'm sure the problem just moved to somewhere more appealing.

    Good luck!

    • "targeted the vehicle due to warmth."
I was told a story once about a cat that thought it was a good idea to sleep in the radiator fan shroud, until the car was started the next day. 70's V8 with a clutchless metal fan blade
