2U or 3U Rack Case Recommendations

Starting a new proxmox project, and looking for a cost effective and flexible rack case.

The case needs to be under 500mm deep due to rack length restrictions. I also only have ATX power supplies available.

The motherboard I am considering is likely to be a Micro ATX, but if the case fits an ATX motherboard I may look at that as an option.

Also open to suggestions on mATX motherboards with an AM4 socket (I have a Ryzen 5 5600X)… and preferably more than one pcie x16 slot, and 2 x M.2 slots.

Have looked at Silverstone and TGC so far, but interested to hear from the gurus in this forum.

Thanks.

  • If you want something cheap then try the ones sold on Aliexpress however I won't trust the axial fans (if any) that might come with the case. I settled for a 1U case as I wanted a silent low power rack server for my home rack. I only used the Aliexpress enclosure and everything inside were of reputed brands including the PSU and it had been humming away happily for the last 2+ years.

There aren't that many options for homelabbers in Australia, unfortunately.

I would take Silverstone over TGC. How many drive bays do you need?

    • Thanks, I do like the look of the Silverstone cases over the TGC units. I am trying to economise of drives, so will try and have at least 2 x M.2 on the MB, and then 2 or 3 3.5 drives in the case.
