When Should I Buy Kenji Items from Myer?

I've bought a few Kenji items at discount over the years and have been meaning to get some of their jeans. The 2 for $99 special they've always run is the better value I can find (unless settling for Big W or Target jeans).

With the imminent collapse of Myer, I suspect that Kenji will cease to exist (as far as I can tell, they're a brand owned by Myer). So would it be better to wait for a closing down sale and hope my (very common) size is still in stock? Or buy now to keep from missing out. If a clearance can be anticipated and were starting on Monday for instance.

Anyone got any theories on how it will play out?

Closing down Brisbane and Adelaide ≠ closing down…

    progress…

Despite profits, 2 major cities closing down, plus 1 Melbourne location was leading me to think more would follow and downsizing Kenji to be a possibility. Production of stock would have to be decreased now and at one point they'd decide it's no longer viable.

Where does that leave BankWest and Big W?

    • The Adelaide store is in a boondoggle of a building. If it only opened straight into the mall it might have done a bit better in the 21st century.

I think OP has jumped the gun a little.

Myer is going strength to strength (unlike David Jones)

I think you're right. Having just seen they're running a design comp for their Summer '23 range, the brand will be around for at least another 12 months.

      • +2

        Summer 23 is over.

    • What exactly is strength to strength?

Was like wtf I hadn't heard of them closing, would be big news for some major shopping centres which have Myer as the central hub

A few around Sydney have closed over the last coupe of years, slight bump in interest from people then back to no one caring.

Myer centre was a dive even 10 years ago… let alone after Myer goes..

Look even if we go along with your dramatic theory that Myer is closing down, I’m sure they’d try to keep the profitable parts of the business alive. That is, if online sales for Kenji are decent enough without the need for physical stores, they’d somehow maintain online sales of these products.

Now, I don’t know how well Kenji itself does in general, let alone specifically online v in store. But it’s not as simple as “Myer closing = Kenji (or all other Myer brands) closing”.

I only asked because someone might have insight into the strength of the brand, I'm unable to find any press about this. Or if store closures were a sign of downsizing and the brand being made redundant. I see they're running a design competition for Summer '23 - so the brand will be remaining in stock for at least another 12 months.

Myer Frankston already closed down months ago…
    DJs also closing stores..

Westfields would be having a little bit of poo in their pants I'd guess with these signs of whats to come.

    • Has been chatter that Myer's Rundle Mall store may go, due to a dispute between them and the site's Singaporean owner.

be interesting once all westfields are empty apart from 200 coffee shops and 20 womans clothing stores that nobody ever looks in

      • I think Myer is just trying it on to get a rent reduction.

        • The floors are big enough for an entire individual store to occupy each one. And each one might actually be capable of some marketing to draw people in again. Myer used to be a nice place to shop but it's so expensive and old fashioned, the sassy gay guys at the checkout can be so intimidating.

          • @AustriaBargain:

I've thought the same for years… could never see what teh appeal in the place was… same as DJ's….

          • @AustriaBargain: Their claim is that a large amount of space around them is vacant and thus not bringing in customers. If they couldn't rent that space out how could they rent out the space from Myer vacating?

            • @JIMB0: Yes, all the floors around the upper levels are vacant. There was a giant craft store taking up one of the opposite levels. And. women's gym at the very top. On the ground level there is just random soap stores and newsagents.

How to actually draw people in, I don't know. It's kind of a pain to get to. It's out of the way. Maybe they should get rid of all the mall facing street level shops and make it all an open walkway into the building. At the moment you can walk by the building and not even know there's all that space inside. Install mall facing escalators that take you up to the second floor maybe.

    Does Myer know about this?

    • +7

Nope. Only OP know about this.

      Kept it secret until now…

  • Clickbaity title. The Myer I just visited in Sydney seemed pretty busy. Doubt they’re closing down.

    • -5

Wasn't intended to be clickbaity, a mod changed it from the original "Myer closing down and Kenji." I guess neither were great - was just looking for advice when there is a trend of major locations closing.

Hopefully Brisbane City will have Kmart and Aldi eventually…

Maybe because it's Myer, and not Myers?
