1580

Don't be foolish in April - adopt a greyhound this month for just $75!

April is Greyhound Adoption Month across Australia. To celebrate, Greyhounds as Pets are offering the reduced adoption fee of just $75! (Normally $350).

Greyhounds make 'greyt' pets; they are low maintenance and their sweet, calm natures make them a great addition to most families. Each greyhound has been assessed by trained animal behaviourists and is ready to find its 'furever' home 💚

      The world's fastest couch potatoes!

    • +2

Our pair spend the day snoozing on maps outside my study. They do like a couple of trips outside to doze on the lawn, and enjoy a walk.

  • +1

Damn PERTH, you're expensive. $100 in Victoria through GAP for a rescue greyhound.

    For people in SA:

Greyhounds As Pets SA - https://www.facebook.com/GAPSA/

    Greyhound adoption fee - $150.

All GAP greyhounds are vet checked, vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and desexed.

GAP greyhounds come complete with their "Green collar" which signifies a greyhound that has passed through all temperament testing. This special collar also allows them to walk without a muzzle in public. You will also receive a lead, and winter jacket with your adopted greyhound.

When you adopt a greyhound from GAP SA you are getting a dog that has a known history and background. Plus a support system from people who know and love greyhounds.
When contemplating adding a new pet to your family, consider adopting a retired racing greyhound.

The website has a list of available greyhounds. As of this morning there is a very rare greyhound available which has the potential to live with a cat.

Sadly the black greyhounds find it harder to find their forever home. One reason might be that a black greyhound is almost impossible to see at night particularly when sleeping on the floor. I've considered decorating ours with LED lights for Christmas.

      • +1

We have a black grey and black carpet…i know the feeling.

Especially cause their so sooky. The carry-on makes you think they have been seriously injured.

  • +3

I BET this is a good deal

    • That's a racey call!

      • -2

        Oh wow really…

Great to look after animals, also worth knowing that in WA and other states, greyhounds are never allowed off lead (state legislation due to breed related dangerous behaviour with other dogs). Not even allowed in 'off lead' areas. Sadly many people miss this and get frustrated when faced with it (I know from many locals)

    • +6

Dumb rule but we do follow it.

Our grey lives with roaming chickens, has holidays with a shitzu and is scared of cats… Not sure what shes gonna do at the park. But its the rule so we do the right thing.

Our girls so happy when we visit friends with a farm. Runs and runs and runs and runs. Then sleeps and sleeps.

      • +3

Could be other breeds of dogs wanting to fight a greyhound in which case it doesn't matter how nice your dog is.

        • +2

My experience is that breed would be a poodle.

      • +2

Off-leash dog areas do exist. And thank god they do - dogs need time to run off energy in a safe environment too.

    • Same in Vic. If ranger catches you the fine can go into five figures I've heard.

      • +8

"no officer, this is a whippet"

  • Beautiful dogs

  • +1

These guys don't do well with cats and smaller dogs generally so make sure you're aware of this.

    • +3

My neighbours cat was snatched off their front fence by a Greyhound walking past on a lead, tore her to shreds… a very sad situation. The dog has likely been put down now. Every Greyhound I've met has been super sweet but if they're ex racers they probably should still require muzzles. Instincts take over. Probably less of an issue if they were rejects for being too small and never trained to chase small fluffy things

      • +3

I've seen this first hand. The sweetest dog with people can become aggressive when startled by other dogs. Ex racing dogs have been traumatised and abused, and first time dog owners may be unprepared

    • No different to any other animal - some are fine, some are not.

Our greyhound's favourite friend we met on walks was an undersized little fluffy terrier thing, and was always happy to play gently with much smaller dogs in the family.

    • We dog sit my wife’s sisters greyhound Mintie a bit. Gets along fine with our two 18 month old cats, and is very chill around other dogs. Met a 10 week old puppy last week and its owner said Mintie was the first dog that was chill enough to be near the puppy… So yeah, I guess it depends on the the dog.

Btw, here’s Mintie in a race just a couple of years ago.
      No 4.

    • Rubbish. Our 40kg 5 year old ex racer lives comfortably with a Maltese Shitzu who is in his face all day long.
      Each dog needs individual assessment.

      • +2

That's why I used the term "generally" implying that it doesn't apply to every greyhound. My brother adopted a Greyhound and they can't have him around cats or other smaller animals because he would rip them to shreds.

I was looking at adopting one too and we were made aware of this by the rescue place. People need to learn to read the nuance and not just neg without cause lol

  • +6

Great dogs from all reports that I hear. But at the end of the day, these are the dogs that have been discarded by the racing industry as they didn't show enough potential as pups.
After a crackdown on the industry, they needed an ethical solution. So created the adoption market.

In the past, the breeders would euthanase them. Otherwise the industry was going to be shut down.

    Woof Woof.

    • +5

I can't believe the racing industry has convinced people to pay $350 to take their discards off their hands.
Even if you agree with the unrestrained breeding of racing litters, they should be free.

      • +1

The fee covers desexing etc. From what I've heard GAP WA are also great about providing support down the line for dogs that have injuries from racing before being adopted out.

  • -1

That there is a need to adopt animals is a sad indictment on humanity, that the pandemic shone a searchlight on.
You selfish superficial people pleasing mofos - its why I'm a bit of a misanthrope

    • +1

if only we were all wise philosophers like yourself, my liege

    • Don't be a bit of a misanthrope, go all the way. (Until you find a redeeming human feature of course, convincing enough to make you return to the village. Good luck with that)
I'm glad decent people adopt discarded dogs, but I'm with you. Fancy creating an unending waste stream of loyal, sentient beings, just so people can gamble.

        • +1

People should be licensed to have animals, period. Registered cats eat more wildlife than feral ones do, and any cat off it's 'owners' property is feral in any sense.
Pets are treated as bling these days, and in some cases so are kids. Of course the fall back position is to blame social media…..BAD! social media! (did somebody say, "individual choice")
That cop-out excuse is a license to enable universal DILLIGAF

          • @Protractor: "… and in some cases so are kids…"
Yep, which is why I'd neuter everyone on the planet & get them to pass psychological assessments before giving breeding rights also

            • @Boogerman: OK 2.5 questions, when/where can I vote for you, do you need a policy advisor.

        • hurp i've had this thought before everyone

    • There's no need. People just don't want the animals to die because they're cute. They're selective about which animals get to have this treatment

  • +9

I kinda wonder if this gives the greyhound industry an easy out, rather than increase awareness of exploitation. I realize the animals are de-sexed but I wonder how many adopters have gone on to fancy themselves as trainers too.

    • kinda wonder no more

    • +2

Hobby trainers who have a few dogs that are treated closer to family pets are less likely to be cause of issues.
It is the large trainers who run it as a business that tend to cause the issues.

I would much prefer that the industry didn't exist as I think many of the behavioural issues are caused by a lack of socialisation as puppies. There are similar issues with 'COVID' puppies that missed out on puppy school and socialisation.

      • +2

"Hobby trainers who have a few dogs that are treated closer to family pets are less likely to be cause of issues.
It is the large trainers who run it as a business that tend to cause the issues."

You can't have one without the other. The problem isn't 'socialisation', it's commodifying driven by gambling. You hear the same BS defence in horse as in dog racing. "We love our animals'. Yeah nah. If humans were licensed to have pets, the covid rescue glut would be minimised.
The greyhound industry would still be dumping dogs in the bush by the truckload if a whistle blower hadn't come fwd. That event alone should have been enough to shut them down. That shows how much corrupt influence gambling has directly over and above our elected reps duty of care.

  • +2

Adopted one a few weeks ago, the only complaint is how much he farts.

    • Can also be diet related

    • +8

Feel the same way about my husband, tbf.

      • +3

        Can blame the 🐕

  • +5

    Thanks got 2

  • +7

This is one of those fantastic services that I wish we never needed in the first place.

  • +5

Be aware these dogs can run really fast so it's hard to catch them if you want to have a race in the park

    • Teach them to lose on purpose to boost your ego, 1 schmacko per loss

      • If ours knew we had treats in our pocket the bigger problem was getting her to leave our side.

    • +1

Most states don't allow greyhounds off lead in public so not really an issue.

  • We've had a couple neighbours who had them, just the most gorgeous dogs. Also good apartment dogs at least in this case.

  • +1

Are these grey imports? What's warranty like?

  • +2

Each greyhound has been assessed by trained animal behaviourists

And now tell us what happens to all the animals that fail the assessment… This whole industry is brutal and supporting it only encourages more of it.

  • This should go without saying, but I'm inclined to say this on every single adoption related deal as unfortunately there are too many people in our society capable of doing shitty & horrible things and people that don't give a shit about anyone (or anything) else but themselves even in the worst situations and resort to doing stupid shit

The below is what I have typed up previously but still very much applies here.

For anyone interested in adopting an animal, please understand that you're adopting a friend for life not for a season. Care for that animal like you would your own child. They provide unrelenting love to you and deserve the best in return.

If you're ever in a circumstance where you can't care for them anymore then please understand that it's never ok to abandon the animal when there are better and more appropriate ways to surrender an animal.
