i have a dell dimension 3100 that I want more ram for.
currently only 1 gig (2x512).
looking for either 4 gb (2 x 2gb) or 8gb(2x 4gb).

Just bought some on eBay for about $25 ish all in incl shipping from the US.
You could try this:
4GB 667mhz single stick DDR2 DIMM for $48 delivered (brand new)
2x2GB 800mhz Team Elite kit for $53.30 + variable shipping
2x2 800mhz GSkill F2 6400 for $55 + variable shipping
IMO there's no point going beyond 4GB of RAM. Your computer is using a very old Pentium D series, which is a fair bit behind in terms of tech.
You would see better performance gains if you spent the money on say, an SSD instead. Or better yet, save the $ for a new computer.
